Check oil hot, and as far as if it should be on kick stand or not can easily be determined by the dipstick, the rule is if the dipstick moves from side to side then check it on the kick stand, if the dipstick is solid then check it upright. the dipstick should always be screwed all the way in and then take it out to check fluid level. I hope this helps you.

There is a dip stick screwed into a tube on the side of the crank case or a screw plug directly into the crank near the bottom (normally coloured red) If it is a screw plug then unscrew and correct oil level is near top of thread Replace plug when finished. If it is a dip stick remove the dip stick--- wipe clean ---and replace screwing it all the way I. Remove again and check oil position on dip stick Should be on top mark or top hole if there are holes.

Removing the oil dipstick. Is it screwed on?

No, the oil tank is on the bottom of the transmission. The oil dipstick it a long plastic dip stick on a knurled knob about 2" in diameter located on the right rear corner of the transmission. Check the oil with the bike on the Jiffy stand. There are two marks on the stick. The Upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is 'FULL COLD" do not overfill.

Go here and look at part # 189
http://www.bikebandit.com/2005-harley-davidson-touring-road-king-flhr/o/m18548#sch619685

The dipstick knob is held in by friction of an O-ring around the diameter of the knob. Just wiggle it while pulling upwards on it.

Good Luck

How to change engine oil

Harley has changed the oil drain position on Sportsters a lot during this time period. Look for a hose that plugs onto the frame on the left side of the bike somewhere between the bottom of the battery box on down to the bottom of the frame behind the primary cover. Take the hose off and the oil drains. Change the filter as well, Add three quarts of oil. Check the level on the dip stick. The top mark on the stick is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is ''FULL COLD" . Keep the level between the two marks and do not overfill.

Good Luck

How do you check the oil wheres the dip stick

The oil tank is on the bottom of the transmission in our RK. The cap is a large round chrome cap with knurling around the outside about the diameter of a half dollar, if you remember those. It's down low on the right hand side of the bike.

Pull the cap and the dipstick out with the bike on the side stand. There are two marks on the plastic stick. The upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Wipe the stick off and look closely and it's written right there on the stick.

Good luck

How do you check the oil levels on a 2008 super glide. I know you check it hot, but do you screw the dip stick in or do you just stick it in.

Ok on the oil dipstick, you have two marks. The upper mark is "FULL HOT". The lower mark is "FULL COLD". Check the level with the bike on the stand.

On the primary, remove the derby cover, with the bike standing straight up, the oil should be no higher than the bottom edge of the clutch spring. Do not overfill. If you overfill the primary, it will cause the clutch to drag and you'll have difficulty finding neutral with the engine running.

On the transmission. with the bike standing straight up, unscrew the dipstick, wipe, and stick it back in the hole. Do not screw it in to check the oil.

Good luck

What's the proper oil level on the dip stick for my springer softail harley and do I check the oil when it's hot or cold.

check when oil is hot(let idle for about 10 mins, or a short ride),level sould be about halfway between marks on stick. your bike only holds about 3 and 1/2 quarts including the filter, pour small amount at a time when topping off.

Low oil on dip stick

no, in my opinion there was no harm done to the engine. if the dipstick had oil on it when you checked it, then its fine. any time you change oil and filter, let the bike idle until its hot then shut it down and wait a couple minutes and then check oil level.. and add if necessary.

How to check oil on my bike

There are usually two methods to check the oil. One is a dipstick and the other is a sight-glass. You should have one or the other somewhere on the side of the engine crankcase. It should be fairly obvious and not require the removal of any body panels. If you can't find a dipstick in the side of the crankcase you will need to get down on your hands and knees and have a look for a sight-glass instead. This will be like a tiny window with a gauge against which you can check the level.
