Honda equips it's motorcycles with a pollution storing device called a pollution tube. Place a pan in front of the rear wheel and look for the tube that has a plug in the end of it. Pull the plug and all the engine blow by , water, and other horrible gack will fall out of the tube and into the pan. This should drain the the bottom the air box of oil. Typically , what you are seeing in the air box is everything that comes out the engine breather. If there is a lot of oil , your engine was over filled and the excess went out of the breather rather than pop a seal or gasket. If it smells like gas, CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL. If one of your carburetors had a float needle stick you may have gas in your oil . This can happen even though all the motorcycle components are good. Just change your oil and always turn your gas off when you are not riding , and you will not fill your engine with gas again.

Hey would this cause the bike to shut off while at cruising speeds. Recently changed my oil and while I was riding home my bike would shut off like it wasn't getting fuel and did it for every mile or so. I took my air box off to get to the carb and saw there was oil in the air box. Any advice?

Your fuel mixture may just need adjusting or your carbs may need some cleaning the adjustment is a bit painful as it requires a special tool for the carbs if you take it in for a oil change ask em about adjusting the carbs for you - a good shop will have it done in a jiffy

I have a 2005/6 Honda Shadow Aero 750, I was coming home today which intails drropping dow a mountain....about 2000 feet over 5 or 6 miles....when i got to the bottom and noticed it was blowing...

Check your oil level. Engine braking down a mountain side could be overloading the breather system, only because most people do not know there are pollution tubes under and behind the motor, in front of the rear wheel. They collect oil and crud from the engine blow by and recycle it through the carburetor intake. If they are full it collects in the bottom of the air box. This is probably causing the smoke and oil you describe. Place a pan under the tubes and pull the plugs out. All the oily crud should come out. Then put the plugs back in. Also check your air cleaner for oil saturation you may have to wipe out the bottom of the air box or even replace an air filter. Also check that a breather tube has not come off of the top of the motor. This could also cause the oil between the cylinders you describe.

1998 shadow aero 1100. The dealer put almost an extra litre too much oil and now I am leaking steady. I drained the extra oil but the leak continues. I don't think it's coming from the drain plug or the...

Most likely the breather tube has filled your air box with oil. If it has , you may need to replace your air filter. If you look under the motor you will see tubes in front of your rear wheel. The tubes that are capped are called pollution tubes. these need to be emptied periodically. Place a pan under the tube and pull the plug and all the nasty junk will pour out. If there is a lot of oil this may be the source. Replace the plug. Wash your bike with an engine degreaser, then take it for a short drive. Be sure you rev the motor up with some hard acceleration. Then look it over carefully to see the location of the leak. If the bike was run with too much oil the crankcase breather was probably not breathing correctly and blew out a piece of a cover gasket high on the motor. If the gasket had blown out below the oil level you would have a puddle under your bike. If a seal was pushed out you may be able to press it back in. If damaged , replacing the seal may be the only option.

I took my air box cover off and there was a pool of what appears to be oil?also occasionally i will experience a loss of power as if the engine was running out of gas

Take a pie tin or small pan and place it in front of your rear wheel, if you lay down and look you will see one or two black tubes with plugs in them. These are pollution tubes. If you remove the plugs all the horrible gack in the air box will drain out of the tubes and into the pan. If you get in the practice of resetting your trip odometer when you refuel, you will know about when it is time stop and refill the tank with petrol and will never have to experience loss of power you feel as your carbs are running out of gas (caused by low fuel level in the carbs). I just hope you are not having an issue with your fuel pump. This might cause a similar type of problem(loss of power) but it would probably be all the time. Check the fuel pump by plugging a tube into it and running the tube to a gas can. Turn on the bike (don't start it.) just look to see if the fuel pump is working. Hope this helps.

I think you are exactly right. Sounds like you have some clogging in your idle jets and probably in need of a carb tune up. if you havnt replaced or cleaned your air filter in a while, now would be a good time to do that as well, being that some filters begin to break down and pieces of them get into the carb ports and cause clogging.
