ABS - Anti-Lock Braking System And EBD -Electronic Brake-force Distribution In Plain English Posted by: Rohit Khurana March 1, 2010 in Automobile Technology
AdvertisementCarBlogIndia Technology Articles , today I will talk of one of the most talked about safety feature called the ABS And EBD. Again I will try to keep the language simple and human understandable (which non-engineers can also make some sense of), pun intended.
What Is ABS ? Anti-Lock braking System system or ABS is a safety system which prevents the wheels on a moving vehicle from locking up(or cease while rotating) while braking. ABS offers improved vehicle control over dry and especially slippery surfaces by reducing the braking distance but it can also increase the braking distance in case of loose surfaces like snow, gravel etc. Ever since the invention of ABS, it has been evolving and the recent systems not only prevent wheel locking but also electronically control the front-to-rear brake bias, which we know as Electronic brake force system, Traction control system, Emergency brake assist or Electronic stability control.
Working Of ABS
Advertisement
When brakes are applied under heavy loads, the braking pressure becomes high resulting in heavy braking or in other words locking up of wheels. The ABS overcomes this by monitoring the wheel speed and releases pressure on each wheel brake lines in the form of rapid pulses switching between different brake lines. which prevent locking-up.

Preventing lock-up under heavy braking helps the driver in maintaining control over the vehicle. In modern ABS an individual brake line is provided for each of the four wheel enabling different braking pressures for different road surfaces of the wheels.
What Is EBD ? Electronic brake- force distribution system also called as Electronic brake-force limitation is an automobile brake technology that automatically varies the amount of force applied to each of a vehicle's brakes, based on road conditions, speed, loading, etc.
EBD system is always coupled with anti-lock brake-force system. The most important function of EBD is to maintain vehicular control with variation in braking pressure applied to each wheel in order to maximize stopping power. Generally most of the weight of all vehicles is carried by the front end so the EBD ensures less braking pressure at the rear end to avoid skidding. But in some EBD's the distribution of braking pressure at the rear end is more initially when the brakes are applied before the effects of weight transfer comes into play.
Working of EBD system An EBD is a subsystem of the abs and its function is to control the effective adhesion utilization by the rear wheels. this definition has been given by SAE in its technical paper no. #920646.

The Antilock brake force system releases pressure in different brake lines at the time of heavy braking to prevent locking-up. The action comes in the form of releasing pressure from the braking circuit when it detects extreme and rapid deceleration in any of the four wheels in order to make sure that the driver maintains control over the steering during panic or emergency braking. For example if the wheels of a vehicle are on snow as well as asphalt then in case of emergency braking the ABS will monitor the speeds and eventually the EBD system will release less pressure for wheels on snow and more pressure for wheels on asphalt to prevent wheel lock-up

Sounds to me like either the front brake lever or the rear brake pedal is not returning to its rest position. Did you happen to drop the bike or something else that might have bent something to do with the lever or pedal?? Leaving the ignition off, operate the lever and pedal separately and listen carefully for the click of the switch(s). You should hear a faint click when you operate the lever/pedal. If you do hear the switch operating, then I would suggest that a check of the ABS controller fault codes is next step. Use a GS-911 or take bike to dealer.

Post back with the results of the switch test.

Good Luck.

1998 dodge Dakota Ok so I just got this truck and when I got it the abs light and brake light were on plus the speedo doesn't work sometimes I replaced the rear speed sense on the diff but the lights...

If the red brake light and the ABS light are both lit up on the dashboard, do NOT drive the vehicle. It indicates a major malfuntion with the brake system. The red light indicates low brake fluid or the parking brake engaged. The yellow ABS without the red light, indicates a problem the computer found and it disables the ABS system while still having conventional brakes. Since both are lit, it needs the brake system repaired. What you replaced on the rear diff was probably the rear ABS sensor. The vehicle speed sensor for the speedometer should be located on the rear of your transfer case if you have 4WD, or on the rear of the trans if you have 2WD.

keep bleeding and bleed the front as well the littlest amount of air will keep pedal spongy if the abs came on after doning brakes check the abs lines and connections up front the abs lines sometimes get banged up will doing brake job the abs sensor is the wire that runs from behind the rotor to the fire wall sometimes they get hit knocked into or damaged if wiring looks good have vehicle scanned for code .the code will make it easier to pinpoint what side-- if circuit problem--or if sensor went bad most auto stores offer scanning for free

the master cyclinder is divided into diagonal wheels. meaning that each line from the master cyclinder provides fluid to a front wheel and rear wheel. on the front resevoir of the master cyclinder it would be perhaps the left front and right rear brake for example. you need to block the lines going to the rear wheels independently and then bleed the brakes again starting with the wheel furthest from the master cyclinder.

1999 4x4 dodge ram abs light &brake light has been on about a week. brake fluid &brakes are good. any suggestions

If you lose the speedometer, replace the rear differential speed sensor on top. If the speedo is ok, then it's your ABS pump/solenoid unit in the engine compartment left rear side. Most of the 99's have only the rear ABS, not front so don't look at the front brakes for the issue.

How do i bleed the brakes on my 1998 gmc jimmy

it takes two people to do, one to pump and hold the brake peddal and one to open the bleeders....

One person pumps the peddal 5-6 times and holds, while the other starts at the Passenger rear tirer and opens the bleeder valve till the brake peddal hits the floor, and close it, do this till no air comes out but only fluid, then go to Drivers Rear, then Passenger Front, then Drivers Front.....

DON'T open the vlave while they are pumping, or allow them to let up on the peddal till you have the vlave closed again, as that will put air back into the system.

Abs light flashing alternatively when putting ignition on

There is a simple way to fix it as I've discovered. Start your bike, if lights are flashing ride for a mile or two applying the rear brake a few times. Stop the bike and place on centre stand. switch off motor then restart. Your flashing lights should have gone. Why the flashing happens is if you ride and use your rear brake rarely and then your bike sits for a day or two without use your rear brake assembly fully retracts, ie pads away from disc and ABS gizzmos inactive. The ABS sensor unit then reports extended non use pattern to the onboard 'brain' which activates the warning mode of flashing lights. This has worked for me several times over the last 5 years when its occured. Full ABS operations return. Tried it on a mates bike and it fixed same problem on his.
