Question about Yamaha XJ 650 Motorcycles

1 Answer

I start the motorcycle each morning with the choke and let it run for about 2 mins and back off the choke all the way and rev it a couple of times and it idles a little rough but stays idling. When reving during sitting and rinding it backfires quite a bit and then eventually goes away. The idle is getting a little rough but stays running. Do I need to just run the heck out of it? Maybe gummed up a little? Pls advise.

1. When you rev it up, has it reached its normal operating temperature?
2. If you know how to then check your timing as it sounds like a little off at the moment. When did you have it adjusted last?
3.You can add some fuel cleaner when filling up again and run with it until the tank is low again.
God enough, then return a comment. Thanks

It could be any of a dozen problems, but it sounds like that year old fuel pump. It could be a loose wire killing the pump or even vapor lock. I would start with testing the pump under pressure.

If it has an elec choke which most do unless you have a manual choke cable installed in your vehicle you can disconnect the wire to it on your carb but this may make it difficult for you to start and keep your vehicle running when it's cold

This is fairly normal for the model Suzuki you have. Because of the manual choke, of course you have to do this by hand as you are doing. Newer models have automatic chokes.

Pulsar RPM or idling problem.

sounds like when you say cold you mean very cold. If your choke has variable control on it try using more choke until the motor gets warm. Often times the cold weather causes a leaner condition because the air ppm is so much greater leaving you with a leaner running condition.
