Wow! Old technology here.
Depending on what make carb is fitted, the "Tickler" is a lever that pushes the float down into the float chamber allowing the carburettor to "flood". This is instead of a "choke".

Husqvarna riding mower wont start. Makes a high pitched sound when trying to turn over.


The high pitched sound could mean something but normally not depending on age.
Things to check.
1. Make sure it's firing. Check spark plugs.
2. Check oil
3. Try to spin the flywheel by hand. It should be hard to turn. If it spins very easy with no effort STOP! This means the rod is broken and should be taken to a mechanic and most likely the engine will need to be replaced. But if it's hard to spin continue.
This may sound silly but make sure there is fule. And check the oil.
If you did not find any issue with the above issues and all of the safety devices are working properly then you have a carberator issue. You will then need to buy a carberator rebuild kit there not that expensive and remove the carberator clean it with carberator cleaner flush your fule lines and the mower should run. If you do not feel comfortable doing this find a local repair shop.
Briggs and Stratton have diagrams on there website for all of there engines and also there are YouTube videos that can walk you through the rebuild process. It's very simple to do.

I am restoring a 1972 MAR 250.At present it will not run due to lack of compression.Can you tell me if faulty crank seals would have an effect on compression?Thanks,Gary


it would more than likely be piston rings if your crank seals have gony you would still be able to start it but it would smoke really bad

New starter will not disengage after starting. ive tried 2 new starters so far.


On the starter relay you want to disconnect the wire from the starter to the relay. Put on a testlight and ground it or use a Voltmeter. Operate your Keyswitch and see if the power stays on when you release your Keyswitch from the start position. If the power stays on its either your Keyswitch or your Relay that is bad.

Without removing the testlight or voltmeter, if the power is still on, remove the Tickler wire from the relay. If the power goes off with the tickler wire off then it is the Keyswitch that is stuck. Your Keyswitch inside is making contact with the Start side off the switch in the Run position

If your Relay stays on, without the Tickler wire connected the Relay is bad. It is fused across the contact posts.

If there are no power issues found, take the starter out and put some Brake silicon grease and liberally do the shaft. Then jump the starter out of the truck and work the lube into the Bendix.
I also had clients with tractors doing the same thing from their rebuilder. The Bendixes were shipped dry and never lubed.

I installed a new battery but the car will not turn over.Could the starter be the problem? If so how do you no for sure what the problem is? Thanks


Be sure your car is in Park or Neutral if it is an automatic, or in Neutral with emergency brake set if a stick shift. If you have a set of jumper cables take one and jump the POS cable from one side of the main cable connection on the Starter solenoid to the opposite side of the Solenoid.

If the Starter is good it will crank. If the Starter does not crank it is bad. Next, you need to determine why the Solenoid does not work when the Starter is good. There is a small wire called a tickler and it makes the Solenoid work. The tickler gets its power from the Key switch when you turn the Key to Start. If the tickler has power, then the Solenoid is bad if it does not make the Starter turn.

If the tickler wire is dead you need a testlight or a 12 Volt multimeter. You disconnect the tickler wire and check for power on this wire. There is a Interlock switch on the clutch pedal lever, or on Automatics in the shift linkage. If your foot hit this switch it could be out of position or broken. The Brake switch can also be a part of the Interlock.

If you still do not have power at the tickler, your Ignition switch is probably bad and you need to replace it. I hope this information will help you.

Wont start then it dose but is very low and cuts out after a few seconds


This would be a carberator problem. Clean, rebuild, or replace the carberator.
