Question about Harley Davidson FLTR-FLTRI Road Glide Motorcycles

1 Answer

My local HD dealer just installed a HD race tuner, a air cleaner kit and a set of Vance+Hynes true dual exhaust and dyno-tuned on my 2008 Road Glide, $1600.00 parts+labor . I bought the bike from them used in the Spring of 2010 and have put on 4000 trouble-free miles this past Summer., the bike is in imaculate condition. I picked up the bike and got halfway home and noticed a very noticble vibration at any RPM coming from the motor. I brought it back and they checked the obvious, motor mounts etc.. They are telling me that the exhaust is making it vibrate and there is nothing they can or will do.

Take it to another dealer. Dealers usually will not warranty any type of performance work. I find it difficult to see why the exhaust would cause the vibration. Just make sure the exhaust is supported properly to the frame. I would however suspect the race tuner. If the tuner is not adjusted correctly it will cause the engine to run poorly. It may even cause the engine to overheat. I'd suspect the igniton timing. Take it to another dealer or to an aftermarket that has a "good dyno man".

Now, there are two types of dyno-tunes. One, is actually not a dyno tune but more of a dyno run up. Regrettfully, this is what most dealers do. They install a bunch of stuff and then put your bike on the dyno, run it up, and get a print out of the horsepower and torque, that's it. This is simply a run up. The charge us usually about $35 - $50 or so.

Now a true dyno tune is totally different. The run up is just the beginning to establish a baseline. Then changes are made to your race tuner, intake, fuel map, timing settings, and exhaust to get the highest horsepower and torque out of your bike. You are usually charged "X" amount of dollars to begin with and then some much per hour. I've seen a good dyno man work on a bike for several hours changing jetting and such on the bikes and believe me, if the guy does what he's supposed to do, you can feel the difference. Bad part is a "good dyno man" is very hard to find.

Good Luck
Steve

2003 harley davidson full dresser back fires or pops sound on the left side pipe when i let go the the gas handle at around 2000rpms it all started when i had new cams put in

Popping sound at the exhaust is usually due to a very lean setting which causes unburnt fuel to burn late in the exhaust pipe and happens when you are going at a high rpm with a closed throttle making it even leaner. My bike had the same problem and most Harleys are factory tuned lean which is very bad as the engine runs hot. After putting free flow Rhinehart pipes like i did, it became worst so i installed the Vance & Hines fuelpak and now my bike runs so silent and cooler. A great difference from before.

Harley davidson road king acceleration hesitation

Vacuum leak. is first and best guess. Second is mismatched pipes and/or air cleaner setup. If it looks good, it doesn't mean it runs good. If not, try to find a shop other than the dealer's that KNOWS how to do dyno tuning. On a fuel injected HD, each cylinder needs to be tuned separately.

How do I Reprogram ECM with Screamin Eagle EFI race tuner kit (pn 32107-01E) WITHOUT DYNO.

You can use a laptop or desktop computer to reprogram the ECM. If you do this, you will be changing the maps in the computer. The maps may or may not properly tune the bike, depending on accessories such as air cleaner and exhuast, and what modifications, if any, were made to the engine., Dyno tuning is the way to go. It monitors air flow, fuel flow, exhaust gasses, etc. Air and fuel can be added and/or deleted from any part of the map for the most efficient operation. Not using a dyno is just guessing and you could make the bike run worse.

I've got a 2008 Yamaha Road Star with Vance & Hines pipes a a Power commander III USB which was dyno-tuned not more than three weeks ago, they created a custom map for me and the bike was running...

Hi, Jeffcitychri the answer to this question is way above my pay grade but I would go back to the Dyno people also for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem.

I've heard great things about the Terry components tuner but havnt used one yet. If u plan on doing any motor work or anything in the future I would use the hd super tuner. The power commander is also really nice and there are alot of maps available online for free. If u have a local dealer or shop u like using, see what they prefer to tune with on their dyno, that way if u have an issue with the bike they will be familiar with the component. Good luck!

In this situation I'd just go ahead and fit the air filter simply because the major change required after fitting it would be to the jetting(not the EMC).
Then when they dyno tune it they will probably also use an infra-red gas analysis unit to check the jetting, as again the jetting will be affected by the different cams or exhaust you are having fitted.

Have a2008 fatboy put on a set of big radius when letting go of thrortle it pops what causes it to do that

decel pop is caused by a lot of things! if you have big pipes; ie:drag you need baffles to tune the exhaust wave; theoretically upon decel instead of exhausting you are actually allowing reversion- which allows exhaust to actually renter your engine and try to get compressed again; very bad for performance, etc big pipes are cool but need proper baffling and tunage to be useful; may be too lean possible fix w/ supertuner/ dyno runs; I like "lollipop" baffles you can make for under 5 bucks and tune as you need; thats what I run on my 95HP sporty; Have Rinehart true duals on my Road King and via ecm tuning you can really dial it in. F/I is great but you need to "pay to play" no quick fixes like in the carb days; really need a dyno or some sort of computer tuning capability; I recommend Super Tuner rather than the piggyback setups; more expensive at first but wont fry your ecm either. A good dealership will be able to tune it right the first time in under an hour...sorry for the lenghly reply but I see this question all the time...T

I would take it to another dealer. You don't have to go back to that dealer for warranty work. If your getting codes like that I would almost go after who tuned it. Make sure that it's tuned right. If it doesn't have a super tuner on it that could be a problem too.
