Question about Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard Motorcycles

There is no oil in the primary am i suspose to ad oil directly or does the oil come from the engine and oil pump and if the oil is supplied by oiul pump or engine what would cause this problem

    It depends on what year and model your bike is. If the bike is an Evo or Twin Cam powered machine, it should have about a quart of oil in the primary. If the bike is an older Shovelhed powered machine with the original set up, it will not have a lot of oil in it, maybe three or four ounces. Let me know what you have.

You will need to add it seperately. Remove the derby cover and fill till it just starts to come up on the clutchs.

    If your engine is a Shovelhead with the factory "dry clutch" oil system, do not add any oil to your primary or you'll have oil flying everywhere. That's why I asked for the year and model. In the Shovelhead engine, Harley used it's dry clutch system where the engine oil pump supplied oil to the primary. The primary was "sealed" and vacuum generated by the engine drew the oil out of the bottom of the primary cover back into the engine. If you add a quart of oil to the primary, the oil tank will very quickly become overfilled and a very big mess will follow.

That accesses the clutch push rod adjustment, and oil can be added through there.

For using oils is the mobil oil sae 20/50 for engine 2011 harley davidson fxdf is it acceptable? and what oil should i use for the primary transmision case is?


Hi Motors_gm, depends on the average temperature you expect to be riding in untill your next oil change. Contact your local dealer for advice. HD makes several different grades of oil. If you elect to run HD 20w50 SYN 3, which I highly recomend, then it does not matter what temperature you are going to ride in. As an added bonus they call it SYN 3 because you can run 20w50 in your engine, transmission and primary and it comes in a single container to change all 3. No longer do have to purchase 3 different types of oil for your Harley. Great stuff

77 shovelhead w joe hunt mag and s&s oil pump everything is great except after about 20 mins of riding oil start coming out of gasket all around cam cover and mag assembly dont know what would cause...


There ae a number of things it could be. What it sounds like to me is that the oil is not being pumped back into the oil tank and is collecting in the cam chest. It should be blowing out of your crankcase breather tube as well if your crankcase breather tube is open. Behind the oil pump, there are three holes. One is behind and above the oil pump. This is where the breather tube from your oil tank and the primary comes into the engine. The hole directly behind the oil pump in the middle is the oil return line from the very back end of the primary where the oil from the primary is recirculated back into the engine. The bottom hole behind the oil pump is the crankcase breather. It should have a hose that runs back around behind the transmission and just dead ends in a bracket pointed towards the final drive chain. This hose should be open to vent the crankcase pressure. Have you checked to see if oil is being pumped back into the oil tank? If not, the scavenge gears of the oil pump may not be pumping the oil out of the engine and back to the tank. If this is the problem, you may not have the drive key properly installed in the scavenge gears of the oil pump. Still, oil should be pouring out of the crankcase breather hole. But, this is what it sounds like it's doing to me. The oil is building up in the cam chest for some reason.

Oil leaking from oil tank into primary on a 1976 flh 1200 hd


The oil is most likely seeping into the engine and then into primary on your bike. This commonly know in this area as "oil sumping". It's quite common on the old Shovelheads and on Softails. The reason is that the oil tank is higher in the frame than the engine and gravity does it's thing over time. If the bike is allowed to sit up for an extended period of time, the oil will seep past the check ball in the oil pump and fill the crankcase with oil. Once the crankcase gets filled, the oil seeps into the primary through the Timken bearings on the left side of the engine.

If the primary is still in it's stock configuration, simply put a deep pan under the bike and start it up. It will pump a lot of oil out of the crankcase vent hose underneath the engine but it will eventually stop. Unless the primary has been converted to a "closed wet system" like an Evo has, the engine will pump the oil out of the primary as well. After a few minutes of running, shut the engine down and check the oil level. You can leave the oil dipstick out and watch to make sure oil is being pumped back into the tank. When it seems like all the oil has quit "puking" out of the engine, make sure the oil level is at least to the lower mark on the dipstick. Like I said, if the bike has been sitting up for a while, this is quite common.

Now, if he bike has been running and all the oil is being pumped into the engine but isn't being pumped back out, you may have a scavenge gear key sheared. This is unusual on a Shovelhead because they had metal breather gears in them. The Evo engines, on the other hand have plastic breather gears in them and they will break a tooth off the plastic gear, it'll go into the oil pump scavenge gears, shear a key, and the oil pump will quit pumping oil. If this is the case, you will not see any oil being pumped back into the oil tank. You can tell when it's being pumped back because the oil in the tank will be moving and it will be kinda foamy on top. This is because the oil is being pumped back to the tank. If the pump is not pumping the oil back to the tank, you must disassemble the oil pump or the cam chest and replace the sheared key.

How do i check the primary oil in my 2005 harley davidson electra glide. i changed the oil and added 32oz of oil as directed by the owners manual but i cannot see the oil in the clutch inspection cover....


if you put 32 oz of primary oil in the primary case then you have enough oil in there already. Never put more then 1 full quart or you will have leak issues. The way I do it is to have the bike upright and level and look through the primary inspection cover and as long as the chain is in the oil a little bit then your fine.

TRANSMISSION SERVICING


Most are using Syn3 oil in engine, tranny, and primary.
This simplifies this, and is a decent oil.
32oz of oil in primary.
20-24oz of oil in tranny
99851-05 primary case/ trans oil(Conv Oil)

there are other brands that surpass the syn3 oil but it takes some hunting around to find a supply.
Ammsol is one such brand and they recommend.
20w50 engine
15w40 primary
75w90 tranny

I just replaced all oil lines on my 97 thunderbolt. i dropped the oil pump due to a loose fitting. put everything back the way it was. simple right? well when i fired it up. oil came drooling out of the...


you dropped the oil pump it needs to be replaced again and new gaskets installed,you have to be very gentle with the pump they are so porly made.

After these bikes have set for a period of time the oil in the oil tank drains to the lower end of the engine and when started after sitting the oil is usually forced out of the vents for crankcase; which on many of these bikes is through the primary and possibly to the chain oiler etc. Usually after running for a few minutes the oil is back in the oil tank and over supply to the oiler stops! Could possibly soak the clutch plates if it filled primary case also. Be sure and check oil level in tank?! If you added oil before starting it will now be overfilled after starting. This is common problem and will mend it self usually. Does make a mess in the garage toooooooo! Jesse "Leroy" Graves
