A lot of after-market mufflers don't cover up a backfire pop on over-run in the way that the stock system does. Look at The Marble Mod on GIXXER forums for ways to doctor the bike's emissions system to stop the popping.
Another cause of an over-run backfire may be a slight leak where the header pipes emerge from the cylinder head. Check the bolts are tight. Consider new copper washers.
When you let off on the gas on your bike, the fuel air mixture to the engine is extremely rich. So rich in fact that it will not burn. If your bike is backfiring through the exhaust with a loud pop, this is usually caused because your exhaust system has an air leak in it somewhere. Air is sucked into the exhaust system leaning out the fuel air mix and turning it into a combustable mixture which then ignites causing the pop. Check all the joints where the parts of your exhaust system come together.
Aftermarket pipes tend to lower back pressure, this will cause the fuel/air
mix to lean out and result in the "popping" you hear---Backfiring, is extremely rare these days with electronic ignitions and the high
reliability of engines. Real backfiring means the engine is not properly timed
and the fuel/air mix is getting a spark and ignition at the wrong time (when the
intake valve is open). Real backfiring is actually the bike "spitting up" in a
sense, backwards through the carburetor or intake. You can check for exhaust leaks up around the cylinder heads by putting on some gloves and covering the exhaust tips momentarily. I have seen exhaust leaks that will make the popping worse by allowing air to be sucked in during deceleration...Hope this helps.
I have the same bike with 8000 miles on it., Alot of bikes backfire especially these with the emissions package. I'm a smog tech and what backfiring means is detanation from a lean condition. The cylinder gets hot on decel and you get the pop. You could go the sabrehood forums and register and talk to people about these bikes.
What I did was put a k/n filter. put a stage 2 jet kit and a cobra slash cut exhaust and this seemed to reduce the amount of backfireing alot.
Bikes loud and maybe a little quietier exhaust would of been better but for now bike runs alot better.
Hope this helps
If the bike is fuel injected, the module should fix it. If the bike is carbureted, you don't need the module but you will need to re-jet the carb to enrich the mix.
I had the same prob with my 97, It was not the head gasket but the O-ring on top of the head. Replaced the O-ring and has been running good for a year now with no backfire. Hope this helps.
open up the ignition cover plate and check the backing plate. it may have come loose and threw the bike out of time. make sure your plug wires are plugged on tight and the coil wires are secure. It is most definitely a timing problem.
Hi ......... sounds like the petrol is igniting in the pipe, could be valve needs reground (carryout a compression check), leak in the exhaust system (all gaskets & joints good ?). What colour is the spark plug ? Have you recently put a new pipe, filter or re jetted the bike ?
backfiring means you have an air leak or a lean mixture. Look for leaks at the header pipes or perhaps a crack in the exhaust. Cold air getting into the exhaust is usually what causes the backfire noise. You may have a lean engine running situation but the bike would have other issues besides the backfire. Let me know if you are having any other issues or if it just the backfire. Regards, RSelvy
