I can hear click where it would normally engage but it does not. Bike engine sounds fine- rpms go up and down but it did not matter what gear I tried. Coasted to a stop and pushed off the freeway. In nuetral the light comes on and everything sounds fine. When shifted to a gear it will not move when clutch is out and the from the crank case a rumbling sound.

It sounds like the "middle drive" is damaged. You should seek professional help with this problem as a number of special tools are need for disassembly and reassembly.

I have a 94 f150 4.9l with a 5 speed manual and lost 2nd and 3rd gear, would be greatful for any advice, took the shift lever out and reinstalled , did not help. What am I missing or looking for?

I'd be looking for a replacement 5 speed transmission. Does it not go into 2nd and 3rd, or does it go in but won't move? Either way, something broke or is wrong internally, maybe the synchronizer rings are badly worn if it is difficult to put in gear. Can you put it in 2nd with engine off, then start the engine and see if it will move in 2nd? New tranny. Will it not go into 2 or 3? New tranny. Buy a used one, or check the rebuild cost- probably prohibitive.

Why is the shift leaver loose (not working) but the car is still in gear and able to drive in the last gear it was in when it whent loose?

Sounds like the cable is loose or an cable adjuster needs adjusting, check both in the engine bay and under the car, something is loose.

I have a 1997 Saturn SL with a five-speed standard transmission. It suddenly started (seemingly) skipping 1st and 2nd gears. When I'm ready to drive forward and shift the gear-shift lever to (what used...

Take out your middle console and watch your shift cables as your shifting, you may have something stuck or maybe your shift cable bushing has broken. So i would just take the console out, and try shifting in all your gears. And then you will most likely find out what your problem is. :)) Good luck. Hope this helps. I have a saturn too and I LOVE IT!!! Good choice of a car!!! James Booth

Hi, Dennisellis3 and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch not disengaging.
2. Bent shift shaft.
3. Shift fork bent or seized.
4. Gear seized on the shaft.
5. Gear positioning lever binding.
6. Shift return springs weak or broken.
7. Shift return spring pin loose
8. Shift mechanism arm spring is broken.
9. Shift mechanism arm is broken.
10. Shift drum is broken.

Was shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear when shift lever got loose, chould not shift into any gear, seems like it is stuck in 1st now.Feels like I still have clutch, could it be something in the linkage

Sounds like you broke your linkage. It's not as bad as it sounds. It's a cable, or a small plastic part. It will be expensive to have a shop do it. Try to get help from a friend.

Won't upshift under load.

In reality, the gearbox was never designed for power shifting. Time is lost in trying to do a power shift with the tranny not willing to cooperate. Give yourself a break and use the clutch. It beats a missed shift every time.

Changing gears

goes into gear fine. Your boot is most likely preventing the lever from returning to zero. Then when you try to change this will happen. You need to either adjust your lever postion (1 set screw) or remove the bulky rubber foot pads. I have large feet, so removing the rubber pads was almost a necessity. Before doing that, I had to shift up with the little 1/4 bit of sole that stick out from the sides of your boot (if you have cheap boots like me!). ,,,
