Question about kawasaki ZX-6R Ninja Motorcycles

2 Answers

Hi My 98 ZX6R seems to cut out when I drive in rain, as if it runs on 2 or 3 cylinders. Then 'n stop under a bridge and try to warm up the engine by keeping revs high to get rid of the moisture, after that it seems fine for a while. Is there a known way of preventing this and what exactly causes this? Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!

I want you to take a waterproofing silicone spray and on your electrial spray your plug wires and coil pack . Then try it in the rain , this is going to be a process of emlinanation , you can try it
with a water hose but it may not have the same affect , because of the hard road spray coming
in and up. If your bike runs well then you must change wires and coil if solid system if seperate
try wires first and coil pack last, but before you buy anthing take your spray and spray as much
of your wirining harness as you can . This bike has some years on it so check every spot where
yuor harness touches the frame, look for exposer and crack that water could get in, if you are not
sure about it take a piece of clear plastic tubing that will fit over the harness . you can do this by
using a utility blade and slice one side of the clear tubing from one end to the other , put 2 small
tie straps or several tie straps then spray with waterproofing. One other way to check for spark
leak from coil and spark plug wires is to wait until it is really dark then start your bike cover the
head light so it is totaly dark around the motor area . take a break set in the dark and let your
eyes adjust to the dark be patient , now look at your coil , wires , around the plug . do this before
you spray anything . If electrial fire is jumping you will see it . if it is jumping then do not spray
just change the wires , Ok Good luck

Replace the HT Spark Plug leads and caps. It sounds like they are arcing in the wet.
Hope that helps and ride safely.

Hi, H650, working fine, then erratically just stop, seems electrical problem, side stand switch were suspicious, took it off and bridged the wires, the same problem, Thx

Hi, Tamas the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following tests.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the side stand down if the engine does not stall you may have a faulty side stand switch.
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the side stand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the start switch if the engine does not start you may have a faulty clutch switch.
This check is most reliable if performed with a warmed-up engine.

Honda sabre

I have an 04 Honda Sabre 1100 that does the same thing. If the rain is steady, it will actually die. After you come to a stop, it will start right away and run ok for a little while until you get up to speed in the rain and will die again. Very frustrating. Can't see any shorting when viewing in dark conditions. Bike shop also couldn't figure anything out. Any ideas?
If I figure anything out, I'll repost what worked for me.

Some of these vehicles had issues with water getting under the hood through the seal at the cowl panel and getting into the back spark plug tubes, once the engine warms up and the water evaporates the engine will run fine. There is a replacement seal thatyou can purchase to solve this problem. Hope this helps.

It has a seeping head gasket! This is a common problem with all import engines. They are not designed to run hot! Even if they have a lot of miles on them, this problem always seem to follow. If you are familiar with running compression test on a engine, I highly suggest you run one on your engine. Run a compression test with it cold and after the engine is warmed up. If the compression is lower once the engine is warm, your head gasket is leaking compression, and its pulling oil from between the gasket into the cylinders causing the smoke. Or it can be a combination of a seeping head gasket and a bad oil seal on the turbo too as well....

Starts, idles and runs but quits after a few seconds of cutting

Check the air cleaner and muffler for plugging. One screw adjusts the idle stop (idle speed) position and the H and L jet screws set fuel mixture for high speed and idle speed mixture respectively. Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly) then back each out CCW 1-1/2 turns. This is a basic setting and should allow the engine to start and run. Start the engine and allow to warm up. Pull the throttle full on and adjust H CW until the engine starts to speed up, but 4-strokes. Correct adjustment is when the engine 4--strokes running free, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L needle CW until the engine idles fairly well, but allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust the idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine will continue to run. Hope this helps!

THIS COULD BE WATER GETTING ON TO YOUR PLUGS. TRY A LITTLE SILICON SEALANT AROUND THE TOP OF THE PLUG LEADS TO STOP THE WATER GETTING IN

Seat belt indicator won't stop buzzing

have you tried unplugging the 2 prong plug under the seat(its right under the seat belt buckle)? i have a 98 mitsubishi eclipse and i simply unplugged it and it disabled the buzzer. if that doesn't work, you can connect the 2 wires (on the harness side) either by bridging the 2 terminals with a jumper wire or you can cut the plug off and just twist the 2 wires together.
