If this is a new installation, your carb may not be jetted correctly or if the carb has been running for a while, you may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Your carb should be jetted 29.5-31 on the slow jet and 72-74 on the main with your 88" engine. If you've modified the exhaust, the jetting could varry a bit from that.

If your carb has been running for a while with no problems and you haven't changed anything and it's suddenly started running lean, I'd remove the carb and go through it. Check all the jets to make sure they aren't partially blocked. Check or replace the intake manifold gaskets where they join the heads. The carb has a vacuum takeoff point as well. It should have a hose supplying vacuum to your VOES and the vacuum operated petcock unless these items have been removed or replaced. Make sure that hose is in good condition.

Also, when you pull into a gas station, look on the pump and see what percentage of ethanol has been added to the fuel. Although I haven't seen it and cannot verify it, I've heard talk of some stations selling fuel that has more than 10% ethanol blended in with the gasoline. Since ethanol is basically alcohol, it will run leaner than gasoline with the same jets.

Why would my 1997 harley sportster xl 883 run hotter then usual & when it's hot and I shut it off it doesn't want to shut right off I can't figure . The carburetor was rebuilt. tune up was done .


I suspect that the engine tune up was not well done as a hot running motor after a carby overhaul indicates that it is running too lean
could be possible carby to manifold gasket failed or leaking or the carby bolts not tight
could be incorrect float level or the air /fuel mixture screw not adjusted correctly
if the carby has a solenoid near the mixture screw then if that is not working properly ,the motor will "run on" after the ignition is turned off as the pistons will still be getting a charge through the idle circuit that is being ignited by hot spots in the cylinder.

Your chainsaw is running-lean, take off top cover. You should see the air filter. Under The plastic air filter housing is too nuts, 12mm socket is Wot you need next, you need to check these too nuts are tite, these nuts hold the carby to the Intake, all air that goes into the saw is mixed by the carby with fuel. Your saw is running lean. So if those bolts are tite you'll need to check the gasket between the carby and the block....... There are others possibilities but these too are your most likely.

The bike is running lean and is popping a lot. When running it has some black smoke


try ur mixture screw ,screw all the way in then a turn and a half out should fix the problem,another problem could be a vaccum leak at the carby or injection manifold or carby try sprayin water around the inlet manifold or carby and if engine decrecess in idle u have a vaccum leak

Why won't my scooter start/


you have a fuel blockage problem. The fuel gets into the carby slowly and allows you to start but the rev increase is an indication that the air/ fuel ration is going lean and then the motor stops. The same as if you turn off the tap and let the engine run until it stops. It won't start again until there is sufficient fuel in the carby bowl to get to the main jet.

G'day,
I have a couple of suggestions for you.
Your symptom sounds like your bike is running lean(problem improves with choke).
Add that to your other symptoms & it sounds like your bike is sucking air at the inlet tract(front of carbies).
I recomend that you check that any hoses that may be fitted to your bikes inlet manifolds,arn't damaged or split.
If you find they seem fine,try running the bike,& while it's runnung,spray some WD type spray on the manifolds at the front of the carbies(use the nozzle).Be sure to spray the joint of the manifold where it bolts/is clamped to the cylinder head.
If any leaks are present,the engine speed or smoothness will change(as the WD gets sucked in through the leak & then changes the fuel mixture).
Another way to check is, using a piece of hose(about500mm long)place one end in your ear &use the other end as a probe to search for leaks while the engine is running.If there's a leak you'll hear it through the hose in your ear.
I hope that my guess is right & you should find a leak there somewhere.

The engine can be running too lean (plug will show you that, very grey and dry.) crank seals leaking (lean) blocked fuel filter in the carby and pick up hose(lean) mixture setting too lean. You can try 1st by turning the H needle in the carby anti clockwise a 1/4 of a turn and try it. only the H needle. If this does'nt do anything check the others.

High pressure air does not clean a carby!! There are a few small holes in every carby that in some cases need to picked at or cleaned with carby cleaner, deposited junk left behind by fuel that was left in the carby is most likely your problem. Clean your carby alittle better this time maybe you will get different results, left us know how you make out, Good luck!
