I would fill the engine to the proper level with oil, then try to start it.
If that doesn't work, I would install a clear plastic see through fuel
filter, I just love these cheap little filters ! Then you can see if you
have fuel flowing.. If no fuel, then check to see if you have spark.

Hope this helps.

Put in gaer and dies

Some bikes have one or more safety features regarding the clutch and gear box. One feature is a micro-switch at the clutch master/lever, it tells the safety system if the clutch lever is out or in. If the switch fails the safety system will think the lever is out (allowing power to rear wheel) and kill the engine to prevent the bike from lurching forward, potentially causing the bike and rider to go down. The other feature is not as common, it is a similar switch at the side stand. This prevents the rider from starting off with the side stand down. Which can also cause the bike and rider to go down. If that switch fails then the bike will think the side stand is always down and will kill the engine as soon as it put into gear. If you know how to use a multimeter you can test the switch(s) for function and determine if it is failed. Otherwise have it checked by a competent mechanic.

There is also a recall on your bike (and many others with the same gearbox) regarding the power train. A good reason to get you bike in, fix this safety issue and your original issue.

Would a bad voltage regulator prevent the bike from starting? I noticed i loose a good 2 to 3 volts trying to start bike and it won"t start.

A bad regulator would prevent the battery from charging correctly, including low charge.

When using the starter, this is the biggest voltage use/drain than any other system on the bike.

My neighbor's gardenway snow thrower by troy bilt electric start won't start.

check the oil level. There is a safety device in a lot of small engines that will either kill the motor or not allow the motor to start if it is low on oil

I have a yamaha vstar 650it starts fine but when I put it in gear and drive off it stalls....not sure why??

I would check to see in your owners manual if it has an electronic oil sending unit and check if it reads bad does it shut off your bike.then check your oil level. Then go from there see if low oil can stop your bike from running. in some cases it does it a safety measure. But i would do what is called a wiggle test with the bike running wiggle one section of wires at a time to see if this kills the engine. Once found inspect this area good for loose ground or wire or broken clip or frayed wiring Check all get back to me.Remember to rate my solution it is why i am here. Thanks in advance.

Oil light on

Providing the engine is not seized

It may be the oil level SENDER is part of a low oil shut off circuit to prevent the engine from starting when there is low or no oil in the case.

However if it goes bad and there is enough oil in the case the oil level sender may be bad.

How do I prime the oil pump on a 1985 Pontiac Bonneville?

It is quite possible. Most cars will have a low oil level/pressure safety switch that will not allow the car to start. As far as rebuilding the pump, the necessity only depends on your budget. It may be cheaper to rebuild it, or buy a rebuilt unit. If you do choose to rebuild it, I would definitely invest in a Haynes, or Chilton's book for your car.
