It is actually cheaper in some case's to rebuild but in others it is cheaper to buy new. If you can rebuild it yourself then it is cheaper but if you need to take it to a shop , try to get the best price possible on a new unit and get someone to fit it.
Your coils should be running 1 and 4 and 2 and 3, so the 1 and 4 is shot. Look on ebay for a pair, or borrow one to see if that is the problem Should be it.They go bad. Hope this helps.
easy way is take it to the rebuilder and thaey will also re use the original pulley and just rebuid your alt

just tear it all out and replace the parts, not much to that part, but be very carefull with the posts that hold the floats. To set the float level, set them upside down on a level surface and look to see if the floats look level to the horizon of the earth. If they need adjusted, bend the little tab one way or the other (the tab that pushes on the float needle. Good luck, it isn't a hard project, but they are very touchy so don't be surprised if you have to take them back out a couple of time to adjust stuff. Good luck
