2006 Harley Davidson FXDBI Street Bob Logo
Posted on Oct 25, 2010

My 2006 streetbob keeps miss firing when idleing and when I ride it changed plugs and wires and got a hd mechanic to analize it on a computer and still nothing. I took it to another shop and still they could not solve. It started after a month when I drilled the baffles out of the mufflers I did this with pipes off the bike they were rattleling really bad and I could not afford new pipes. The second shop put new stock pipes back on the bike and tested it with a computer but it still has the same problem. When it cuts out the engine light comes on and the speedo drops down not from the speed change of sputtering but seems electrical. I've spent close to $800 already I know the problem started from the backflow changed do I need a new computer or fuel pack please if any one can help I know It is my fault and I kick myself every day I still pay notes and have spent alot trying to get it fixed and still cannot ride it what a shame please help thanks

Don't let your bike just sit there idling. The choke circuit is needed for initial start-up.
If you leave the choke on, when it warms up a little, the choke circuit is putting to much fuel into the cylinders. The added fuel doesn't get fully ignited and just sits in the exhaust pipes. When you get on the throttle, the unburned fuel in the pipes gets ignited and explodes, causing the backfire.
Use the choke to get the bike running. You should be able to start riding after less than a 1/2 minute. And during that time the oil is well circulated to lube all internal parts.
As you're ridding, slowly turn the choke off in increments. As soon as the bike will idle on it's own, the choke should be off to prevent an over rich mixture and foul the plugs.
Plus you're well into your ride and have saved a little on gas mileage.

Some general thoughts - -
when you try to accelerate, a couple of things happen. The engine shifts sometimes, and you put it under a load unlike when it is idling.
Is it possible a wiring harness or a hose is moving when you accelerate ? Is it possible the fuel pressure or ignition module is not good enough to handle the engine under load ? Is the EGR opening early or something causing a vac leak and a lean fuel mixture ?

At idle the engine misses, off idle very smooth and runs normally computer code multi cylinder misfire. have changed plugs and wires did not help. could it be the coil packs of a fuel problem?

This sounds as if you have a vacuum leak, check all the lines and check the intake. There are a lot of things that will cause mis fire. mis fire code is triggered when the ecm reads a very slight difference in the time the crank sensor picks up a signal. Mis fires can be from electrical, vacuum, mechanical, and eletronic sources. If you can get it to a person/shop that read which cylinder are misfiring this helps alot, narrows the field. Let me know I can help. Also it helps to know what engine we are dealing with

I have old splendour of 2002 model. HAVING PROBLEM OF MISSED FIRE

A misfire can be caused by a bad spark plug, wire, or coil, or bad timing, or not enough gas or bad idle mixture.

The symptom is common on cars that have bad compression in a cylinder, as well.

Good luck on this repair.

Miss firing

could be a wire crossed, or it's out of time. since you used motorcraft plugs, did you set them properly to the correct gap? replacing plugs without gapping them can cause the sluggishness, out of time can cause the mis-fires and rough running.
