It really depends on the spark plug being used. But if you stick to the origninal spark plug NGK TR5A-10 it is supposed to be gapped a 1.0 mm since Ford has issued an in house service directive to reduce the gap from 1.3 mm (original) to 1.0 mm (present) 0.03936996

This 1999 grand am uses platinum sparkplugs and should not be regaped, the plugs are to be installed as them come, just take a look at the gap to make sure no one dropped them and closed the gap completly but otherwise install them as they come good day.

you usually dont have to worry about the gap. but when you buy the plugs from the store they can tell you if the gap is already where its supposed to be or if you have to gap them yourself

Most engines have a .060" gap. The only one with another gap is the 3.4L engine which has a .046" gap.

88 through 95 rquires a gap of 35 check the label under the hood to see if its different if it is follow it instead. Also check the firing order to make sure you didnt cross any wires and make sure the boots are in all the way on the plugs your truck shouldne be acting like that just from changing the plugs.
