You don't unless you want to tear down the engine and clean it out. I read somewhere about a method of "flushing" an engine out but I've never done it and I've never lost an engine. I've been messing with Harleys since 1966 and I've never seen anyone do this.

Now, seems as if someone showed me an article that told how to "flush" an engine using kerosene. Personally, running a thin oil such as kerosene, and it is indeed an oil just like diesel fuel is, will do more damage to the engine than anything in the oil left in an engine will do other than metal. If you have metal in your oil, you need to disassemble the engine anyway. My suggestion is not to so anal about your oil, just change the stuff at it's regularly scheduled intervals. If you want to get anal, change it every thousand miles. But, I don't suggest "flushing" your engine. The reason is that there are some places that you simply cannot get the oil out of the engine unless you disassemble it. Now, if you go start pouring kerosene in your engine, you can't get ALL of that out either. Then, when you add your new fresh oil, it's contaminated by the kerosene that was left in the engine.

Good Luck
Steve

Primary tension shoe on a 1996 dyna completely wears down after one day

TOO TIGHT, WRONG OIL, NOT ENOUGH OIL... I have nearly 90,000 on mine with the original shoe, use MOBIL 1 full synthetic since the first oil change.... a little more money, just a tiny bit noisier, and NO metal on the magnetic drain plug!

The engine oil drain plug is on the front left corner of the transmission oil pan beneath the bike. The drain plug towards the center of the pan is the transmission drain plug.
