Question about 1999 Aprilia RS 250

Hi, I have a 1999 RS 250 Aprilia and it has a strange leaking problem. When you turn the fuel on, a minute or so later on the left hand side engine cover petrol leaks out. There is no sign of petrol leaking out of the carb overflow pipe. Could this be the float valve? Could it be both carbs or just the one on the left side of bike? Many thanks. Regards Karl

1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system.
2. Loose float bowl screws.

You shouldn't have to restrictions only happen on faster bikes 600cc onwards but if you talking about the inabilty to push your revs to the very max, I wouldn't do this unless you know what you doing, and by you asking this question, you don't know what u doing, this rev restriction is set in place for safety of your engine, rather than restricting speed.,,,

Hi Chris,

You can download the service manual for nix from here. trying to picture what you are looking at, but if they are the only rubber hoses coming off the carby, then they are most probably the fuel lines. If they come off the very top of the carby, then they may be breathers. The bike has a vacuum operated petcock also, you will need to have it in prime position for the carbs to fill. Then once the engine runs, if the petcock os working correctly, then you should be able to get fuel in on position. Just cranking it over will not created enough vacuum for the carbies to fill.,hence the prime setting. Hi,

Offhand, fuel overflow could be brought about by:

  • misadjusted/punctured float; and/or
  • dirt/sand lodged in the fuel inlet valve. Often this fuel inlet valve is a pin with one end pointed (sometimes rubber) and is controlled by the float.
A seized starter plunger would have to be replaced. This problem could have been brought about by:
  • short/jumping contacts of the starter switch;
  • sticking/corroded terminals/contactors of the starting relay.

Turn both screws inward and seat them GENTLY. Now turn both screws one and one half turns outward. This is the factory setting.

Yes, the float or the float needle is sticking in an open position. The only other possibility is a float that has a pinhole in it and has filled with petrol and will no longer float as it should.

Hi my '95 RS 250 doesn't seem to be firing on the front cylinder as good as the rear one except on high revs. Could it be exhaust valve sticking ?


Hi, Wendy could be a sticky valve but #3&4 are jumping up and down waving red flags and screaming "PICK ME" otherwise the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking check for spark leakage in the dark
5. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
6. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
7. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
8. Faulty CKP or CMP, MAP, ETS, ATS, TPS, O2 sensor.
9. Dirty air filter.
10. Intake air leak.
11. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system.
12. Carburetor damaged, contaminated, sticky float, plugged jets.
13. Multiple carburetors out of sync.
14. Fuel filter clogged.
15. Old or contaminated fuel.
16. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carb vent line closed off.
17. Gas cap diaphragm valve faulty.
18. Vacuum line from intake manifold to fuel valve is broken, cracked, pinched, or missing.
19. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
20. Incorrect valve timing.
21. Valve springs floating, weak, or broken.
22. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.
23. Incompatible performance parts.
24. Control module may be in "LIMP" mode

How to start my aprilia rs 250 after 8 months of being idle?


Hi, Hage if your bike has been idle for months or years and does not want to start you will have to deal with a few remedies:
1. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
2. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
3. Remove the carburetor, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
4. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove fuel lines and replace with new ones.
5. Replace spark plug with a new one and check for spark.

Hi, Anonymous the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, 9 volts or lower.
2. Faulty alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Faulty main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Faulty system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Faulty ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Faulty CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, O2, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
9. . Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
10. Fuel tank empty.
11. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
12. A faulty Fuel Pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
13. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
14. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

Aprilia rs 125 1994 something draining my battery


Hi .... place a multi-meter across battery when engine is running, it should show 13.2 - 14 volts. If it isn't or showing MORE your regulator/rectifier is defective. If nothing its your stator or rotor (left hand side of the engine).
