Question about 2005 Harley Davidson FLHRS - FLHRSI Road King Custom

What's the remedy on backfiring on the back cylinder only? I have solved the exhaust leak already, but there's still popping but only the left exhaust only.

Are they stock pipes?...is it injected or carbed?

Hi, James lean means the fuel charge in the combustion chamber has too much air or not enough fuel if your carburetor is:
COUGHING is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs, a wet or damp build up of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor to intake manifold connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals.
POPPING on deceleration is usually caused by a lean fuel condition or an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and torquing the exhaust clamp to the proper spec.
SPITTING is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw is adjusted too lean.
BACKFIRING is usually caused by a sticky/tight intake valve or a timing issue, 180 degrees out or cam chain off 1or 2 teeth.

How do I fix the exhaust popping manly on throttle back off, or at fast idle. 96 model does not have a pair valve. so I cant fix it like on the 97 model and on

Its making a poping noise out the exhaust and it cuts back when i give it gas

Aftermarket pipes tend to lower back pressure, this will cause the fuel/air mix to lean out and result in the "popping" you hear---Backfiring, is extremely rare these days with electronic ignitions and the high reliability of engines. Real backfiring means the engine is not properly timed and the fuel/air mix is getting a spark and ignition at the wrong time (when the intake valve is open). Real backfiring is actually the bike "spitting up" in a sense, backwards through the carburetor or intake.You can check for exhaust leaks up around the cylinder heads by putting on some gloves and covering the exhaust tips momentarily. I have seen exhaust leaks that will make the popping worse by allowing air to be sucked in during deceleration...Hope this helps.

Carefully check your intake manifold for leaks, cracks, separation. An air leak on the intake side between the carburetor and the cylinder head would be the cause of popping on the intake side. If there are leaks in the exhaust system, an o-ring seal in the head, or a seal between the head pipe and the muffler, this can cause popping or backfiring in the exhaust.

Backfiring when throttling back or on over-run downhill


hi,this is quite common on big v-twins,it is normally caused by a leak in the exhaust system(gaskets or clamps)this allows air to enter the exhaust system which then leans out the mixture inside the pipe,when the next hot exhaust pulse arrives from the cylinder,the lean mixture inside the pipe is ignited causing a backfire,check all the exhaust joints and the manifolds,where the pipe exits the cylinder,and make sure they are all tight and leak free,your problem should then go away,but in saying that,you will always get some exhaust popping on most v-twins,hope this helps
