Question about 2001 Harley Davidson FXD Dyna Super Glide

1 Answer

I installed straight drag pipes on my 2002 super glide. Runs great but second cylinder pops on decel and pops when idles. Also shows some sign of black soot at end of this pipe. Gets 48 mpg plus. there were stock mufflers on before this. What do I need to do to eliminate the one cylinder popping and soot? Rejet?

This is typical of all Harley's that I know of. rejetting is not going to help. Since the engine is a single carburetor engine, if you rejet to lean the rear cylinder out, you also lean the front cylinder as well. If it's running correctly now, rejetting to lean the rear will cause the front cylinder to become too lean and overheat.

Since you're complaining of "soot" in the rear pipe, I'm assuming that there is no soot in the front pipe. Most Harleys do tend to have a little difference in the mixture between the two cylinders but this sounds like a bit too much difference to me. The reason for the soot is that the rear cylinder is running richer than the front. A reason for that could be a vacuum leak to the front cylinder causing that mixture to be lean and diverting the fuel to the rear cylinder resulting in a rich mixture in that cylinder. Check for vacuum leaks at the intake to heads junction, at the vacuum port off the carb.

Another suggestion is that usually drag pipes have a "flat spot" in their performance at around 55 to 65 mph due to a lack of backpressure, I'd install a bolt in the rear of the pipes. On most drag pipes, there is a hole to bolt the baffles into the end of the pipe with. Take a 1/4" X 1 1/4" stainless steel bolt and insert it into the hole. Up inside the pipe, put three stainless steel nuts on the bolt. Do this to each pipe. It does not effect the sound of the pipes but does provide just enough backpressure to almost completely eliminate the flat spot.

Good Luck
Steve

Why does my 2005 dyna super glide not idle

Running fuel/air too lean or maybe bad spark plug or wire. Just make sure wires are tight. Might be fouled.

I have a Yamaha dragstar xvs 1100cc year 2002 as seen in Vidio , it has straight through slash pipes on it , I've had bike 2 months and now it's backfiring loads more on decel , I'm told to change the

Backfiring on throttle-closed decelleration is usually caused by cold air being sucked into a hot exhaust systen. Check for poor seal where the downpipe meets the cylinder head, and leakage at any joints beneath the engine if it has a balance pipe. Hope that helps.

Why do i have excessive exhaust popping on decel

If there are no intake or exhaust leaks, the main reason for decel popping is running lean. The EPA requires that the stock ECU (engine control unit) maintain a very lean A/F ratio (air to fuel ratio). By running so lean there is incomplete combustion and these gasses are ignited in the exhaust when they meet fresh air and the heat of the pipes. Bypassing the air injection system helps with some bikes, but rarely on the Vulcan 1700.

It may seem counter intuitive, but adding more fuel just off idle generally stops decel popping. The only way to do this on the Vulcan 1700 is with a good aftermarket fuel manager like the Power Commander V or the EJK Gen 3 controller.

SUZUKI 2005 DR650SE DUAL SPORT RUNS GREAT BUT AT IDLE THERE IS A SLIGHT POPPING IN IDLE RYTHYM, ALSO BACKFIRES SLIGHTLY WHEN DOWNSHIFTING...HELP

Carefully check your intake manifold for leaks, cracks, separation. An air leak on the intake side between the carburetor and the cylinder head would be the cause of popping on the intake side. If there are leaks in the exhaust system, an o-ring seal in the head, or a seal between the head pipe and the muffler, this can cause popping or backfiring in the exhaust.

Have a2008 fatboy put on a set of big radius when letting go of thrortle it pops what causes it to do that

decel pop is caused by a lot of things! if you have big pipes; ie:drag you need baffles to tune the exhaust wave; theoretically upon decel instead of exhausting you are actually allowing reversion- which allows exhaust to actually renter your engine and try to get compressed again; very bad for performance, etc big pipes are cool but need proper baffling and tunage to be useful; may be too lean possible fix w/ supertuner/ dyno runs; I like "lollipop" baffles you can make for under 5 bucks and tune as you need; thats what I run on my 95HP sporty; Have Rinehart true duals on my Road King and via ecm tuning you can really dial it in. F/I is great but you need to "pay to play" no quick fixes like in the carb days; really need a dyno or some sort of computer tuning capability; I recommend Super Tuner rather than the piggyback setups; more expensive at first but wont fry your ecm either. A good dealership will be able to tune it right the first time in under an hour...sorry for the lenghly reply but I see this question all the time...T

2009 Street glide idles poorly, strong gas smell, stalls

The 09 models come with a "parade" mode which causes the rear cyclinder to quit firing when idling in traffic etc to combat over heating. You should be able to kick it on by rolling the throttle grip FORWARD for 5 to 10 seconds. Have you changed the pipes or air filter? If you have and never had the EFI adjusted (either factory download or fuel tuner installed) your bike could be running extra rich causing the over heating and eventual engine destruction. New Harleys run rich from the factory, any changes to the intake/exhaust system without proper fuel injection management will cause overheating. Try getting your bike into parade mode by rolling the throttle forward to the stops for a few seconds, that will cool things down.

Stage 1 Low rpm backfire

If you are running straight pipes they might not give you the right back pressure. This can be reolved by either going back to riginal pipes or instaling a bolt into the pipes about 5 inches in to make back pressure. Another thing? Did you have the bike's electronic ignition reset after you messed with it?
