Sounds like you have a bad camshaft lobe. Can you take lifter out and use your finger to feel the cam shaft to see if it feels flat? I bet this is your problem.

Hydraulic lifters on Porsche 996. Are sticking lifters a problems on the 996 3.6 engine ? Misfire at idle, coils or lifters. Any thoughts guys ?

You could put a tiny bit a Auto Matic Transmission fluid in the oil for about 10 miles and then replace the oil with a little thinner viscosity oil. for example if you use 20-50w change to 10-30w. If they continue to make noise, replace them. They should not be too expensive, though it is a Porsche, lol

How to replace lifters

Okay, there are two things I can suggest.
1) You can take it to a mechanic at your round the clock car repair shop. A good mechanic can get that done and replace the filter so you wont have to worry about dirtying your self up, you can also learn a thing or two there.
2)The lifters ride on the cam lobes they actuate the push rods and rockers to open and close the valves. One old trick you might try first is to pour about 1/2 quart of ATF (auto ****** fluid) or a can of Marvel Mystery oil in your oil about 75 miles before you do an oil change.Sometimes that will free up sticky lifters. Hope I was of any help!!

You should perform an oil pressure test and see if the engine is producing oil pressure within specification. If it is, the lifters may quiet down over time.

I have built a 496 bbc. it has wiped out 3 roller cams. it is a 1980's 454 block. valve springs were checked for pressure. no coil bind with the lift cam i was running. it has happened twice on the #8...

Are you using hydraulic roller lifters? Try switching to a flat tappet system. Make sure to use plenty of cam lube on the lobes and to do a proper 20 minute at 2000 rpm break in. Recheck all your valve train geometry valve lash and rod length. If everything was done correctly your lifters should have never spun.

Valve train ticking noise 1997 cadillac catera

The cats use hydraulic lifters. Just before your next oil change, or when you are down about a litre of oil, put a litre of transmission fluid (Dextron II) into the engine and drive it about 2to 300 miles and then change the oil and filter. You should hear the valve train noise dissappear within the 1st 20 or 30 miles.

Do not overfill!!!!!

This is assuming you have a plugged hydraulic lifter(s). If you have a worn cam or worn valve train, you need to remove the heads (both) and send them to a machine shop that does heads and re-install...new head gaskets, valve cover gaskets as well as any worn cams. valves etc....

Car really has to be worth it. At this point, if you love Cateras (I have 2 2001's), I would sell it the way it is and get a 00' or an 01'.

The 97' and 98's are not worth the trouble.......

I have a light ticking sound in the engine. Could

hi, to me it sounds like lifter problem if it was a bottom end problem then the noise would be their all the time as this is always surrounded by oil so im thinking lifter as it takes few minutes for the oil to work to the top of the engine correctly.

What you could try is go out and buy some good quality high millage oil this is thicker and protects high millage engines from any oil seal problems and stops any slight tapping noise you hear from the hydraulic lifters. So give that a try first and see how you get on failing that it would be a case of replacing the lifters.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Rebuilt engine. when started again car ticks. timing marks aligned correctly, timing light shows 20 deg. what gives?

Most likely the hydraulic valve lifters, notoriously noisy in Mitsubishi engines. My 2007 Galant Ralliart Mivec 3.8 V6 with less than 15000 miles ticks also as did my 1989 Gallant and 1997 Eclipse.
