Question about 2001 Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard
The petcock on your bike is vacuum operated and you probably have a hole in the diaphragm. Drain the tank, remove the petcock. Take the four small bolts out of the square backside of the petcock. There is a spring, a needle and a diaphragm under the plate. Take it apart slowly so you can see how it goes back together. You can gently stretch the diaphragm while holding it up to a light to find any holes in it. You can buy a replacement diaphragm at your local dealer. Reassemble and reinstall in your tank. Personally, since people have so many problems with these petcocks, I recommend replacing them with a high quality manually operated petcock like a Pingel and blocking the vacuum line off.
