Question about Harley Davidson FLSTS Heritage Springer Motorcycles

1 Answer

I put a new battery in my 98 heritage springer a month ago. two weeks later while on a ride I stopped. the bike turned over a few times didn't start then went dead. I recharged the battery and it was fine for about a week. then it was totally dead. recharged it again and it worked fine but I don't trust it. Could it be the battery is not good or the regulator, or the generator/alternator? I ordered an amp meter and will be installing it this weekend. will this help answer my question? If so what should I look for, to determine what's wrong. Thanks, Terryhp

If your going to work on or troubleshoot your Harley yourself? then the best tool will be a factory H-D service manual. The manual will demonstrate the step-by-step diagnostic procedures for troubleshooting any and all of the "systems" that your vehicle has. It will also tell you the tools that you will need to have. "New" batteries can go bad, but its not likely. You have either a defective voltage regulator (most likely) or issues with the stator/rotor (alternator) By following the "book" you will determine which part(s) are not working so you will replace/repair the right item and not "throw" parts & $ away unnecessarily.

Check your battery terminals are tight. It sounds as though they have come loose, or you didn't do them tight enough when you changed batteries. Perhaps clean the terminals both on the leads and the batteries, and finish with a wipe of Vaseline to keep water at bay. Good luck.

Fail to start

I think I would change the petrol in the tank as it may have become a bit stale. Also I would replace the battery.Make certain the replacement battery in fully charged before you try again.

New battery on new bike,it kills the batterys in 2 days

Either you have a dead short in your wireing or your battery is not charging fully. Use a volt meter your battery will have 12 volts start the bike and it should read 13 plus then take it up to 2000 rpm above idle anyway it should read 14 plus. If you dont have these numbers then you have a stator or regulator problem or both. You may be geting a slight charge when running but not enough to keep the battery peaked out.

Can you help with a 2006 heritage springer, 88c, I did my own 10,000 mile oil change, crank, and trani. The fluid level in the oil tank is well above the add level. Dealer gave me all required oil and...

Dealer's usually tell you the amount you need if the bike is completely empty. Take a turkey baster and remove some oil, ride the bike and check the oil level again. I have seen to much oil blow the dip stick out and cover everything with oil and I have seen the oil tank split.

Battery drained while riding

Sounds like you either have corroded wires going to your battery or your alternator is not properly charging the battery. Get the bike to an autozone and ask them to put their tester on it.

please mark this as a fizya! thanks

Charging problem

stopped for lunch back on bike it started fine. About 20km later I heard the engine revs on my speakers running autocom of the bike the speedometer started going mad jumping from 30km/h to 220km/m, all over the place. The last time this happened was in France and the bike did not start again, battery was flat, bike shipped back to Ireland. Back in Ireland the dealer kept it for few days, battery was fine just needed to be charged, could find no other problem with the bike. While this time I rode straight to the dealer, about 20km away. When I stopped the bike was dead, no power. They did a test and said the regulator is faulty. Was waiting for new one from Aprilia but it did not arrive today so they took one from a new bike. The bike is charging when reved but does not want to charge at idle so they need to go fishing for the fault. It now also seem my clocks are broken as a result of al of this. ,Check to make sure that all of the chassis grounds are free of corrosion and properly connected. I have never had an issue with charging at temperatures ranging from below zero into the mid/high thirties (Celcius). Even at low speed you will be turning 3000-4000 RPM which should have the charging voltage between 14-14.5 V. Put a multi meter on it and see what voltages you are getting at different RPM's,,,
