It is possiable that you have a cracked head,or a bad head gasket.

I have water in the engine oil. Could it be a water pump seal or a blown head gasket?

When you say that you have water in engine oil, do you mean that you have coolant mixed with oil ?
In order to determine if it's a seal or head gasket, you will need to perform a few tests. Cylinder leakage test on each cylinder can be done to determine if the head gasket is bad. When it comes to the water pump seal, if this was the problem, the coolant would not be mixing with the engine oil.

Hi There, How about letting us know your given name, seems friendlier when answering your questions? Okay the problem your friend is having can be caused by something very inexpensive, the radiator cap, or as expensive as a replacement cylinder head. I suggest having the pressure cap tested which means using a cooling system test kit. If the release pressure of the radiator cap has become too low, coolant will be expelled. Also have the radiator tested. If there is a pressure drop look for where the leakage occurs. Other common places of leakage are from core plugs on the engine block and the water pump. Leakage from the pump is many times only evident with the engine running, but be careful only to observe and not to touch anywhere dangerous. If there is a pressure drop but with no evidence of leakage from the parts already mentioned but no leakages are evident, check inside the cabin to be sure that the leakage is not from the cabin climate control. Pressure should be maintained for at least fifteen minutes a little above the pressure stamped onto the radiator pressure cap. If all else fails it is time to suspect the cylinder and cylinder head gasket. If the cylinder head gasket is blown it can sometimes result in a mixture of oil and coolant, evident from the changed colour of the engine oil, but can also leak into the cooling system and result in the symptoms you report. If the engine is petrol with an alloy head, skimming and a replacement of the gasket will usually sort out the problem. If it has a diesel engine with a cast head, the head may be cracked, requiring the cylinder head replacement. Regards John .

Water leak at waterpump

Since you are able to determine that the leak is from the water pump, I assume your Grand Am has a 3.1L V6 and not a 4-cylinder engine. Water leakage at the pump is indicative of a defective pump bearing. There is a "weep hole" built in to allow for this leakage when the pump bearing begins to wear out. Replacement is the only repair.

Hi David, The water pump replacement should have had nothing to do with performance, unless the vehicle overheated before it was replaced? Have diagnostic scan carried out on the vehicle to find out if any sensors have become defective. If the vehicle did overheat it may be that the cylinder head has distorted and is leaking. Check the engine oil and if it has a milky colour it is mixing oil and water. If not it may be leaking between cylinders and loosing power that way. carry out a compression test and if two pistons adjacent to each other have the same low reading, that is where the leakage is. If the leakage is into the oil galleries, sump pressure will force oil from the any weak joints, the dipstick or filler cap. Good luck Regards John

Check coolant leakage, radiator fan operation, radiator for clogged and water pump.
Re-torque the cylinder head bolts to the specifications and / or replace the cylinder head gasket.

Gh patrol genuine 110000km lacks power, using water bubbles in coolant bottle. Any other possibilities apart from gasket or cracked head

could be air in system causeing cavitation from the pump but this will not explain lack of power. If it runs rough when 1st started then clears up in a few mins (when water is burnt out of cylinder) then most likly head or gasket. You need a cylinder leakage test performed this will not only diagnose a head / gasket problem but also what cylinder / s the problem is in.

Hi Lil Cutey, The proof that you have a leakage is the fact that you need to add coolant every day. The leakage is somewhere else in the cooling system other than the radiator. Look at the places where the radiator pipes join to the engine to see if there are any signs of leakage. There will be a powdery deposit a similar color to the coolant. If you locate the leakage you may be able to get new hose clips and attend the problem. If the leakage is not evident from there, you will need to look more deeply. Inspect the front of the engine, where the serpentine belt is fitted and look for the same marks around the water pump. If its the water pump which is leaking it will mean fairly major work. If you want to tackle it let me know and we can go through it together. but it is not simple! Now we come to the worst part. If there are no signs of leakage from the water pump, start the engine and leave it idling until it gets to operating temperature and then let it continue until you can see which part of the engine where the steam is most dense. If its from the back of the engine (the part closest to the passenger compartment, then your car may have a major problem with that cylinder head. To work on that needs a certain expertise and special tools and equipment. The cylinder head will also need to be taken to a machining company for skimming. This is a sign that you have combustion gas entering the cooling system, have a cylinder leakage test done to find this out.
If this is the case you will need a head gasket replacement or cylinder head replacement.

2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316.
Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s).
1. Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for "low" cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00.
2. If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01.
3. If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8.

Hi there,Your cooling system has a leakage that is causing your engine to overheat. Your top cylinder gasket is most likely burnt out by now. You need to get the top cylinder gasket changed after the leakage point in the vehicle is fixed/changed.
