Question about Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide Motorcycles

1 Answer

Electronic problems with a Harley motorcycle 2005 Dyna Wide Glide HARFXD1450 no electrical power to starter when switch is in on position. Cycle sat for 2 weeks and when trying to start all that happened was a snap and no electrical power after that. Is there a breaker or fuse and give me a location on machine.

checked all fuse's. all ok. noticed battery positive conection loose. Have battery saver or charge unit on it and have that plugged in. after checking fuse's and fixing conection it had power to system so tried starting and system snapped and no power. checked all fuse's and they are ok still no power. could there be a time delayed breaker or relay that needs a full battery charge to work system?

    Yes

The relay is fine so what else should I check?

There is a DELPHI module H-D P/N: 68923-OOC that is located next to the fuse holder that has a button on the end that is inside the compartment that holds this device. This has a burnt smell to it but when I try to reset this button I have power to the switch and starter. push the starter and it snaps and no power. could this be the problem or do I need to keep looking for loose conections

Yes, it's probably a fuse that burned. Replacing it is easy - it's under the the ignition module cover, Horn side of the bike. But you must find out why the fuse burned: check the starter and the wiring to it before replacing the fuse.

No, no relay in there apart of course the relay for the starter - but you have probably tested it already, correct?

In that case the only thing left to check are the wire connections and the key switch - you have a bad contact that when powered sparks badly and the heat of the spark deforms it, cutting it completely. The only way to find it is to use a voltmeter and start checking every single one - start wit the battery.

Yes, this is it - burning smell = overheated and deformed contacts. This cannot be fixed, you will have to replace it.

You could have poor, dirty, corroded battery and.or starter cables, you could have a similar conditioned ground for the starter. Positive and negative voltage drop tests would prove or disprove this. You could have a misaligned jack shaft assembly. You could have a defective starter. More likely you may also have a burned large solenoid contactor in the end cap of the solenoid.

NEED TO CHARGE BATTERY FOR 2005 DYNA WIDE GLIDE CAN I CHARGE WITHOUT REMOVING SEAT AND HOW ?

Yes. Hook the positive cable to the starter solenoid terminal, (where the battery cable mounts) and hook the ground to an exposed bolt,(or nut), near the starter, (or anywhere on the frame).
