Question about 2002 kawasaki VN 1500 Vulcan Meanstreak

1 Answer

Hi, I just picked up an '02 Kaw Meanstreak 1500 with 17,000 miles. It runs great. The owner claimed the bike had been running dino lube in it from the get go. I am not sure if I should run 20/50 or 10/40, need help on that one. My parts distributor and friend says it is okay to run mobil1 full synth for v-twins motors.....and has it on the shelf. I would like some professional support on this, and what lube and weight of oil is most recommended. The guy I bought the bike from said never run synth lube as it could damage the rings, and seals, etc. Sounds like he was blowing smoke to me and didn't have a clue......please comment. Thanks, Jim.

Hi, Boulevardrid 20/50 is for moderate to hot weather riding 10/40 is for moderate to cold weather riding and yes to the Mobil 1 the oil Gods claim synthetic oil is better than dino oil I run full synthetic in my bikes and cars.
For this situation, I would call or visit my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry.

Check the piston to cylinder clearance. You very well could have wore either the piston and/or the cylinder.
Also check the rod for up/down play.Running out of oil could have ruined any bearing in the motor.

SOURCE: Motor shuts off as soon as I start to accelerate.

Might be a fault in the side stand sensor, you cant go far with the side stand out, or if the sensor has not sensed the stand is up.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

For some reason, the problem is incomplete...

If the problem is, idle and revs good while in neutral but shuts down when gear is engaged, then it would most likely be the sidestand switch. Try to check, clean, bypass or replace.

Otherwise, postback to clarify and/or describe fully.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: 2003 vulcan 750-how/where to check engine oil level / noisy

there should be a little window just below the oil fill area that says high and low, that's where you gauge the level of oil you have. it's not a dipstick, and not very precise, but that's it.

You're asking at what age the teeth start to fall out in a woman.
It completely depends on the care that was taken throughout it's lifetime.
Some women never lose their teeth because they care for them all their life, others have dentures at 20 years old.
Mileage on the bike is irrelevant if the engine was properly and regularly maintained.
If the seller is confident in the condition of the engine, he will give you a WRITTEN WARRANTY on the bike.
I would tell him that you plan to drive it back home, and at the extreme least, have him guarantee that the engine will last for that trip.
Personally I would ask for nothing less than a 30 day warranty.
If the seller is unwilling to provide any kind of WRITTEN warranty, I would be VERY leery of making the purchase, especially considering how far you need to ride it to get it home.

Stuck

first things first: Before you look at anything else on the bike to try to solve the problem, check to make sure all the fuses are good. It could be something as simple as a blown fuse, in which case you got yourself a hell of a deal. If all the fuses are good, check to make sure all the ground wires have a good clean connection.
