Thanks for your answer. Actually this is a fuel injected bike I just picked up. I think it just sat too long for extended periods. I suspect it's a combination of old fuel mix with new a slightly gummy injectors. I put some Lucas "tune up in a bottle" in the fuel and will see if that cleans it up. there's an external fuel filter and also one on the end of the fuel tank solenoid. I'll check those. It seems to pop more when I am running around 3,000 rpm and back off the throttle just slightly.

I just bought it yesterday. Cut me a little slack. I plan on changing all the fluids and filters asap, probably tomorrow. I'll try 1 tank of gas with the Lucas additive. If that doesn't clear things up (it worked on a Burgman scooter I bought that also sat), then I'll take to the dealer for the injector service. Thanks again for the confirmation. Ralph

It seems that the fuel is not reaching the carb in the right quantity, that is why it runs while idling and sputters when you need more fuel after a few miles. Get the fuel line cleaned and also the carb and ensure that the fuel is flowing freely. Or if there is a fuel filter then that needs a change.

Nothing stays new if not used. So is this bike. What it needs is a good servicing after the rest it has had. If you had told the complete story in the begining, your bike would have got serviced by now. Anyway, npt too late yet. Please get it serviced as getting the injectors cleaned etc requires specialist's efforts. All the best.

OK. Do let me know the results of your drive or visit to the workshop/dealer.

Bike backfires and at an idle it shoots out a blue flame

Purchase a EFI controller. I suggest a Fi2000R. It is easy to hook up and fairly easy to set by the instructions.

1995 Jeep grand cherokee is missing while running. When it is under a heavy load (driving fast) it runs fine. When idleing and slow driving it spits and sputters.

I have the same problem on my 95 grand cherokee laredo. Sometimes it starts out fine and after about 10 miles it starts spitting and sputtering. Then after a while it seems to clean out and run fine again for a little while. Then other times it starts out spitting and sputtering at the begining. I changed the fuel filter and that was not it. It is a 4.0L 6cyc. Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Broken Arrow, OK

Runing lean

has good power and I got a great deal. I just ordered the Clymer manual (3-5 days delivery) so I am posting here to see if you folks have any quick suggestions. I noticed that the engine has a slight backfire/sputtering on deceleration and would take a while to warm up so I was thinking that it was running a little on the lean side. There was also some minor bluing on the exhaust. I took the plugs out last night and they appeared to be fouled. They were coated with carbon (not wet oil). Now I was thinking that it might be running a little rich. I cleaned the plugs and re-gapped at .0035. The engine seemed to warm up quickly but the it was still sputtering a little when downshifting and decelerating. What do you think this is? yeah backfiring while decelerating or downshifting can mean that you are running a little rich. I adjusted the idle screws on my bike to make that problem go away. Makes sense since as you slow down you normally release the throttle to virtually closed anyway... I havent had that problem since. Except now I get backfiring while riding at highway speeds... methinks my carbs are being flooded and the float levels need to be adjusted.,,,

I think your problem might be your fuel relay which is situated next to the fuse box in the engine compartment.
