Question about 1981 Yamaha XJ 650

1 Answer

Just rebuilt the carbs on my 81 650 midnight maxim and it will run great for a while and then the plugs will turn black and quit running. Seems to be getting to much gas and fowling the plugs. Thanks for any help

Sounds like either sticking float needles or incorrect float height setting. If you replaced the float needles with after market ones the setting may need altering. Not a Yam expert, so you will need to consult your manual for the correct height.

It sounds more like a fuel problem to me then a bad coil or spark ign the spark should be blue but its hard to see in daylight
You say you rebuilt the carb are you sure your main mixture jets are at least 2 to 3 turns out off the stops .
Try pouring fuel down the barrel fill the float bowl if it runs then dies its fuel don't let it catch unfire you should have 45 sec. of run time then adjust the the mixture screws 2 turns is base but when its is running good turn them in 1 at a time and give it 30 sec. to adjust until it starts to stumble then back it out a 1/4 two 1/2 turn then repeat on bank 2

Hi, Anonymous start with 1 1/2 turns out then you will need a vacuum board or 4 vacuum gauges to sync all four.
For this scenario, you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere $10 you can download another one.

I have a 1992 Suzuki GSX-R 750, that wont start

It is in the carbs, A bike will act like that when it needs to be jetted, most jets are not adj, but whoever built the bike, must have messed with the carbs, you can go back to factory settings, which is about 1 1/4 turns out, and try it, you might need to get new jets, you might want to try dyno jet kit, they are adj and work great.. I had to do my bike, the exhaust was burning my eyes, backfired, wouldn't run, factory jets didn't work. But I found a dyno jet kit on ebay, and it works great. But before you take the carbs off, take a piece of heavy paper and cut the air intake in half with the paper to see what it does, then cut by 1/3, then 1/4, just to see if the intake is messing with you. Check it out, hope it helps.

My mower starts and stays running for about 5 seconds then quits..has gas and oil any clues

Check gas line. Check for a gas filter and replace it. Replace spark plug. If the prob continues - it might need the carb rebuilt.. If a small engine sits to long without being run - the gas will shellac in the carb and render it to not function properly..

have a great day !
