Hi, Vette1977 for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix or parts inquiry. If necessary transport your vehicle to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your issue. For more information about your issue please visit the website below. Good luck and have a nice day.

How do you adjust the timing chain on a 1985 virago 1000. She's sputtering a lot

the cam chain is usually self adjusting unless its very slack its probably ok ,if it is very slack the adjuster may be stuck or the chain may be badly worn, also check the valve timing is still ok if the chain is slack.spluttering is usually a carburation issue or an ignition issue, loose camchains just make a noise until they get so loose that they jump teeth and bend valves.

Chain adjustment

Just a guess, but beings you didn't give YEAR/MAKE/MODEL, that's all I can do.

IF it's the rear drive chain you're talking about (as opposed to the primary chain), get rear wheel off the ground.
With bike in neutral, rotate rear wheel until you find the tightest spot of the chain in the middle between the rear sprocket and the transmission sprocket.
Loosen axle nut, adjust rear axle adjusters evenly until slack is within spec.
Rotate rear wheel in normal direction of travel and see that chain is tracking true on sprocket. If not, adjust as needed with axle adjusters.
IF mechanical rear brake (instead of hydraulic rear brake), adjust brake.

Drive chain slack?

Typical chain slack should be about two inches from bottom edge of the chain to the top. Grabbing the chain in the middle (halfway from sprocket to sprocket) and moving it up and down. After adjusting , you should raise the rear wheel off the ground and spin the back wheel checking every 6 inches or so that the slack does not get tighter or looser. If the chain gets tighter as it goes around the sprocket it is an indication that the chain is stretched at that point and needs to be replaced.

Engine is loud when hot at topend

It is likely that your noise is coming from either the cam chain or rocker arms. As the engine gets hot, the oil gets alot thinner-especially if the oil is in need of change. This would explain the extra noise when it is hot.

First thing to check is the valve clearances to be sure they are within tolerance.(Intake:003-.004" an exhaust:.004-.006") Be sure to check the valves on a cool engine only.

If they are in spec, and you've got fresh oil in it, and the noise continues-next is the cam chain. You can check this by removing the valve cover from the top of the engine. You have an automatic adjuster on this bike, so there should be no slack in the cam chain. Specifically, check for slack on the rear side. If there is slack, you'll need to get your cam chain replaced.

If you've verified all the above, next thing to suspect is piston noise- usually from wear on the piston skirt. This can be verified by having a leakdown test done on the engine, since an engine with piston noise will also show alot of leaking past the rings. I hope this helps you out.

The chain keeps getting tangled and the toilet keeps running. The chain is very difficult to untangle

there is too much slack in the chain. when the handle is at rest, there should be very little slack in the chain. and when you flush, don't slam the handle. also, if the handle is all the way down when you flush and the flapper is being pulled too high, leave a one link slack. and the hook that holds the chain, clamp it closed to avoid the chain getting rehooked on it.

Chains slacken off

way outside the recomended slack (which is 20-30mm). Any suggestions as to what could be causing this? I am thinking there are two options: 1) the chain and sprockets are shot and need urgent replacement. 2) the rear axle bolt is shot and despite being tightened to the correct torque it is loosening as I ride. Has anybody got any advice on this? Any feedback is welcome. Adjust the chain to spec then mark the adjustment slider and the swingarm at a common piont on both sides of the wheel. Use a paintpen or steal some nail polish for this. Then see if the wheel moves as the chain slackens off when you ride. It sounds like your chain and sprockets are toast though.......,,
