Question about 2000 KTM 640 LC4

3 Answers

I have a problem with the starter on my Sons 2000 KTM LC4 Supermoto. When he pushes the start button the engine appears to rotate 1 revolution then the starter seems to disengage with a graunching noise as if it were partially disengaged with the engine gearing yet not turning the engine. The Battery is fully charged I even tried jumping with another Battery Any suggestions as to what I should look for.(The engine does not start). I recently replaced the head gasket and took great care setting the valve timing My son says the starter was like that since he bought the bike in 2007

THESE SUGGESTIONS ARE OK BUT THE STARTER IS GOOD HAVING NEW BRUSHES FITTED RECENTLY AND COMM CLANED. I HAVE A FEELING THAT IT IS MECHANICAL.

We have a dirt bike, we go to the beach and dunes a lot. Every time we go thu water we take the starter off, disassemble it and wash the armature with carb cleaner or gasoline, if we don't do that, dirt and rust build up will make the starter slow and heavy. While is off, it turns just fine, but when installed, it can not turn the motor fast nor long enough to start it up.
So my recommendation is to disassembly the whole starter, not just cleaning the brushes contact points. Starters are not complicated at all. If nothing is broken, the solenoid is good, the brushes and contact surface is good, the only other thing is dirty armature, as simple as that.
Good Luck!!

I am no bike expert but this sounds like a simple mechanical issue. Either the starter is not properly aligned or needs repair/replacement. If you can't kick start the bike because it is or feels like it is locking then there is something not aligned correctly. A weak starter or a starter with an internal problem will give you this symptom. In fact, you could narrow the problem down a bit by removing the electric start totally and see if that clears up the manual start problem. If it does then you know the major problem is the electric starter.

Hi! Looks like that the starter is faulty. The solenoid is surely worn causing it not to kick the engine with force. If you have an extra one try replacing it. This will surely work. Please be sure that you got fuel and a good set of spark plugs and plug wires. Hope this helps and have a good one!

KTM Lc4 640 2004 No spark fitted a new coil still no spark tested pulsar coil got 108 ohm's getting power to CDI tested blue and white wire to coil what els is there I can do

Hi, Anthony and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and CDI box.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose, check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil, pick up coil, igniter, trigger coil or CDI box testing needs to be checked with an ohmmeter at 70 degrees Fahrenheit
7. Faulty safety switches clutch, kickstand, neutral, off/on etc.
8. Faulty ignition switch.

KTM 950 sm won't start...starter tries to kick bike over but sounds like it is not getting enough juice...battery terminls and lead wires get very hot....battery is new..so I know that is not the...

The wiring should not be getting hot, but if you are trying to get the engine running with the starter motor and it is not turning the engine over, you need to investigate why the engine is not turning. Put the shifter in top gear and try to push the bike (key off) to see if the engine is free to turn. If ok, remove the starter motor and check the drive to the engine. It may be a broken chain or other interference trouble. Try running the starter with the chain disconnected. If it won't turn (make sure the body of the motor is touching the engine), the motor may be jammed in some way. The other possibility is that the wiring to the starter is grounding out somewhere--maybe the starter solenoid. Hope this helps!

Hello. I suspect that the actual cause of your troubles is old fuel. Read on. Whilst your bike was not operating for 3 months there has been no activity for the fuel... so, the fuel grows something like a moss or fungi in the tank... this is in the form of clogs, which is usually white for unleaded fuels.

So to make the engine to turnover again to start. All you need to do is, empty the fuel from the tank (Professionally or DIY) and fill it back up again with NEW FUEL.

Also get a can of starter fluid. IF the bike won't start with the new fuel, spray some starter fluid into the air intake and then crank it over. Keep it running with starter fluid if necessary for up to 5 minutes.

So when you leave your bike for an extended period of time (over 5 days) turn on the engine every 2nd day to clear out any white clogs, for only about 2 minutes.

And turn OFF the fuel switcher to prevent any fuel flow to the engine, which creates the white clogs.
