Question about 2008 KTM 505 SX-F

1 Answer

Im haveing compresion or decompression problems i think. I put a hole in my silencer and it was haveing trouble running. i thought it was the silancer. i got a new pipe and the problem was still present. i would hit the electric start and it would turn once , pause then turn over agian. Its sounds like the cylinder goes up or down then stoping for a second. ktm thinks it might be compression problems. what do you think

SOURCE: I have a 2011 KTM

Thank you for contacting FixYa with your inquiry.
This is a tough one but I have had similar problems with other bikes usually an upgrade for a chip in the ignition systems computer or black box.
In this case it sounds like the stator winding's. When it's cool all is well in runs normal. When heat transfers to the stator (Basically an Electric Motor with Winding's around it's poles) it expands and the winding's could be separating and/or shorting out. You could test the leads with a good ohmmeter (meg ohms) after your runs and see if there is a different reading then from when it's cold.
http://cyclehuttktm.com/FicheFinderNew/FicheFinder.aspx see figure #3 3 77139004000 STATOR $184.99 $184.99

This is not a cheap part but it should be a warranty item as new as this bike is.
Hope this helps get you in the right direction,
Best regards,
TF

To much compresion will not roll over with plug in

Two possible problems here. One easy to fix and other harder and more expensive.
Without knowing which engine you have I can only give some generic info. First I would check and adjust your valve clearances as most ohv engine tends to loosen over time causing the decompresser to become inoperative, If this doesn't solve the problem then decompressor or the cam itself is most likely worn out.

My 1986 mercedes 300e runs hot i replaced the thermastat

Hi,first of all worm the car up to running tempriture, put your hand on the water pipe that is coming from the fermastate is it hot if so try the one at the bottom of the radiater to see if that is hot if that is hot then the radiater is fine, nexst turn engine off, then undo the oil cap to see if your oil has a musterd colour for oil if oil is ok,then you will have to do a compresion test to see if there is one of your cylinders has low compresion.
some times you can have a broken head gasket which can couse uneven running due to water going into the cylinder.
I hope its not bad and a easy fix this is just to give you food for thought, best of luck.

Compresion in sump

HI I THINK IT IS BEST TO FIRST SHECK THE COMPRESION IN THE CYLINDERS, USING A COMPRESION TESTER FITED INTO THE SPARK PLUG HOLE, SPIN OVER THE ENGINE AND CHECK THE READING RECORDING IT, ON PAPER FOR EACH CYLINDER WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS ON ALL 4 CYLINDERS CHECK OVER YOUR RECORDED NOTES, IT IS NOT ALWAYS LIKELY THE READINGS WILL BE AS SPECIFIED IN THE WORKSHOP MANUAL AS A BIKE OF 10 YEARS OLD WOULD HAVE LOST SOME OF ITS ORIGINAL COMPRESION, BUT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A READING SIMILAR ON ALL 4 CYLINDERS, IF 1 IS SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THEN YOU COULD HAVE A PROBLEM WHERE THE PISTON OR PISTON RINGS HAVE FAILED, 1ST TRY THE AFORE MENTIONED CHECK BEFORE YOU START GETTING INVOLVED IN ANY EXPENSIVE REBUILD, IF YOU WERE TO REMOVE THE ENGINE OIL FILLER AND RUN THE ENGINE, IT WOULD BE QUITE NORMAL TO EXPERIENCE SOME SORT OF PRESSURE HERE ALTHOUGH IT COULD GET MESSY AS OIL WILL EMERGE, HOPE THIS HELPS

I have an xr250r 1996 but wen i kick start it thers no compression but can run start it sweet and theres heaps of compression how can i fix this problem

First , check your compression with a compression tester. It should be at least 100 pounds pressure just to run. Preferably 120,130,140,etc.. Some motorcycles have a decompression cable that works off the kick lever, others have a decompression lever you hand operate. I believe yours is hand operated . I think the actual lever in the valve cover on top of the motor is sticking or the decompression cable itself is hanging up and not allowing the exhaust valve to close properly.

Hi

First priming hte engine(put some gas in the plug hole)and start the engine for few times until the engine runs constantly. If not there is a fuel delivery problem.Check the air and fuel filters, the fuel line, the muffler and screen inside.Disassembly the carb, check and very carefully clean it with compresed air.
