Oil in air cleaner on a harley davidson 2006 883 sportster

Hi Georgianna, oil leaking from your air cleaner is caused by oil carryover from the engine. For what ever reason the breather system is not seperating enough oil mist and air from the piston downstroke. There are cheap and quick easy fixes and there are more exspensive ones. Start by trying the following:
1. Run your oil level half way between the add and full mark when hot.
2. Run oil breather lines from head into a TEE fitting below carb/induction module then a single line into a mini filter under frame.
3. Purchase Arlen Ness Super Sucker.
4. Replace umbrella valves and realign oil pump
5. Upgrade oil pump and cam plate
Good luck and have nice day.

Changed the tank on my 2002 883 sportster now I have fuel coming out of the overflow tube ! I cleaned the carb so now what?

Hi Goodwin_bird, guess what you have to go back into your carb again to decontaminate the junk from your new tank, you may have the begining of fuel injectors or fuel filter clogging up from evil ethanol sludge and his buddies dirt, rust and water. You should also check your gas cap and fuel vent lines for proper function, also the fuel line between the pump and check valve at the bottom of the tank for pin holes. Try using a fuel stabilizer (Sta-Bil) and an injector cleaner (Rislone) to help evict unwanted tennants. For mor information on your issue please visit the websites below. Good luck and have nice day.

98 Sportster 883. starts & w/ choke, won't take throttle or choke off w/o stalling. Bike sat for a long time (years). Used Gumout to clean carb b4 pulling tank, cleaning & put fresh fuel -...

No, nothing else to check. You need to completely disassemble the carb and clean it out. When gasoline left in the float bowl evaporated, it left behind the gummy additives that the refinery puts in the gasoline. This mess has clogged the jets and small passageways in the carb. The reason it runs with the "choke" out is that it is not a real "choke" but rather an "enricher circuit". It has it's own air passageway and fuel metering "jet" in the float bowl.

Good Luck

Replace my enrichment cable 883 sportster 1998.do i haave to remove carb.

Yes, you must remove the carb to change the cable. Right where the cable goes into the carb, there is a plastic nut deal that screws into the carb. Take the air filter off, take the enricher cable out of it's holder on the left side of the bike, disconnect the throttle and idle cables and the fuel lines, and the carb just pulls right out of the manifold. Use a 14mm wrench to take the cable out. You'll have to take the spring and plunger off of your old cable and put it on the new cable. I'd put a new manifold seal, rubber seal on the manifold where the carb plugs in, if I were you. They have a tendency to create a vacuum leak after they've been run a while and you pull the carb out. They don't cost that much.

Good Luck

My harley 2004 sportster XL883 is starting, but it is backfiring alot and when i try to ride it has no power.

Is it backfiring through carb or exhaust? Has it been sitting for any period of time? We suspect carb issues. Try cleaning carb, pay special attention to the pilot jet and main jet circuits. Clean with spray carb cleaner and air, do not use wire. Make sure needle and seat are clean.

When the carb filter cap is on the bike wont start i take it off its starts it seems like an air floe issue

I believe this is caused by an overly rich fuel mixture. When you take off the air filter you are allowing more air into mix which leans it out enough to start. Hope that makes sense.

2004 883 sportster skipping when off the gas

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. When you're "on the gas", the manifold vacuum is low and therefore won't **** air from the outside. But, when you "let off the gas", the manifold vacuum goes way high and if you have a leak, air will be sucked from the outside causing one or both cylinders to run lean and misfire.

I'd replace the intake manifold seals at the heads and the seal at the carb. while you're there, check the vacuum hose that goes up to the VOES switch and to the backside of the fuel petcock. Good Luck.
