Question about Harley Davidson FLHTC Electra Glide Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

My 1983 electoglide, when its been running for awhile, it starts popping as though there were a short then loses power and nearly dies, but after rewiring the entire bike it still does the same thing. Now I've changed carbs to a super b and problem has improved considerably but still pops on takeoff and upshifting. Do you know why?

It could be any number of things. It could be jetting in the carb. Have you changed where you purchase your fuel or have they changed their fuel. I've seen some places that are selling gasoline that has lots more ethanol in the gasoline than normal. Ten percent is max. for use in your Harley. Check your jetting in the Super "B". It should be about 29.5 on the slow jet and a 72 main jet. Have you changed anything on your exhaust system? Any time you change anything on a motorcycle, it effects the entire system. It all has to be matched together. Try this, loosen your fuel cap. Don't take it off just loosen it and take a ride. If it runs better, you vent is bad in the cap.

Trouble with new batteries losing charge. I also purchased a new charger. It will run for awhile a couple of weeks then it will just keep losing power and just stop.

Number 1, always charge after every use. You can check if the charger is charging quickly, by turning on the scooter and watching the gauge when you plug the charger in. The gauge should climb up if it does not move then charger is not working. Make sure the charger is plugged into an outlet that is not shut off with a light switch!

I was driving along the highway and was going to open my window. I accidently hit the lock/unlock switch instead and heard a pop. After the pop the van died on me as i rolled to the shoulder of the road....

You probaly burned out a fusible link. Look for a red wire that has a short piece of black wire connected to it. That black wire may be burned. It may be near the big stud on the starter or near a main junction block.

White smoke coming out of mower

It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.

Sluggish loss of power and popping noises from engine

Clean the distributer cap in the inside, it has water in it thus causing all the noises and the back fire.

Engine dies, starts right back up then dies, now won't start

Springtime start ups after sitting up for awhile can be a problem. You have nothing to loose, spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner. That may be just what is needed for an easier spring start.

Geo Metro 1994, diagnose no fuel presure problem.

Quite a few things can cause a car to die after idling for awhile, but if you have verified that the fuel pressure is actually dropping when the motor dies, the likely culprits are:
1) Electric fuel pump in the gas tank is bad
2) The fuel pressure regulator (on the throttle body) is bad
3) An electrical problem in the power to the fuel pump (like a bad fuel pump relay or lose ground wire to the relay's circuit)
