Question about 2004 kawasaki VN 1600 Mean Streak

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Mean Streak 1600. The bike has 90K miles on it runs great! But I am beginning to have intermittent starting issues. Sometimes the bike will start right up, if I ride it for awhile and stop, could be a few miles or maybe as long as a tank of gas, when I start it up again it will sometimes crank for a long time before it starts. Once it starts it runs fine. I am going to replace the plugs although them appear to be fine no signs of fouling or signs of damage etc. Look like they are burning clean etc. I use premium gas all the time. I think it may be an injector issue?

The way you worded the reply is confusing?
Are the throttle sensors effected by a worn fuel pump or are they a separate issue from the injectors and fuel pump?
My air filter is fairly new.
Some one suggested running some Sea Foam through the fuel system do you recommend this stuff?

Yes, the problem is most likely in the injectors - dirt has accumulated in them and is obstructing the fuel flow. But you should also check the fuel pump - it might be worn out ant not delivering its full pressure, the throttle sensors - they might not signal the fact that the throttle is closed, and the air filter - it might be clogged.

The other suggestions are a separate issue, that generates similar symptoms - the engines rides well then badly and it stops. I suggested that you check them in their order of probability: from slim to almost none.

You must use a fuel cleaning additive for the injectors. Sea Foam is one of them and it's quite good, but not the best - it's a very old formula, that will not work very well with modern ethanol enhanced fuels and their gum deposits.
I always use only BG44. If you need to read more about injector cleaning

My 2007 Kawasaki Mean Streak cutoff while I was riding it. Oil light came on, now it won't start. I added oil and even replaced the battery, but it acts as if it doesn't have enough power to start. ...

Not getting enough power. Did new battery get charged? Check for bad ground or other faulty electrical connection. Briefly try to jump start.? Make sure wire didnt get hot and touch frame causing short. Good luck. Oil light comes on after shutdown . If on while running, you could have locked it up.

I have a Vulcan Mean Streak 1600/2005. The problem is that the bike is getting spark on the back cylinder but apparently not fuel through the injector. I discover a short at the back or # 2 injector....

It is very possible that when you had the short it did damage the #2 injector and will need replaced, but just a little more FYI, if you replace #2 injector it would be wise to go ahead and replace injector #1 as well.

2008 kawasaki mean streak uses a quart of oil about every 800 miles. It's has been doing it for a while.

If it is smoking, then your going to need piston rings.

If its leaking the oil, try to located the leak and buy the new gaskets to fix the leak. If its a side cover gasket, or maybe an o-ring on the oil cap or o-ring on the oil filter cover.
Wipe the bike down or wash it down and look for the oil.

Look near the oil filter and see if oil is leaking, i have saw this several times where the oil filter is leaking, and oil blows down the whole underside of the bike.

The only other place the oil can go is in your airbox. Check to see if your engine crankcase breather hose is blowing by way to much oil and soaking your airfilter. If this is the case then you need to change your oil and filter.

How much is the reserve on the kawasaki mean streak 1600 gas tank?

If its set up like mine, there is no "reserve" tank as I used to know it (I.E. a petcock that you turned to access the remaining fuel in the tank). If you mean how much is left after the fuel light comes on, I have noticed two things. The fuel light will start dim and grow brighter as you continue getting closer to empty (easier to see at night : )). I have noticed that when the light is on fully and I pull in to fuel (done this multiple times espec. when I first got the bike), I only was adding 3-3.5 gal. in fuel which means there is between 1-1.5 gal LEFT in the tank. quite a reserve off a 4.5 gal. tank, right? HaHa. Hope this helps. I generally the purpose of the fuel light and when it comes on I take note of the odometer, and pull in when convinient (20-30 miles AFTER the lite comes on and never had a problem. Probably could push it more than that, but...

Bought the bike last week and did a 3 hour road trip. When i got home to clean the bike I notice oil spray and found the source to be from within the round fuel injector cover. Opened it up and found about...

I've heard of the over fill issue before. just drain and add fresh oil to the proper level. your injectors are probably okay but if you still want to clean them just soak them in regular ATF (automatic transmission fluid). after they soak just wipe them off with a clean shop towel and reinstall.

There is no "best" setting. The correct setting depends on your riding style, what you wish to achieve with the cobra fi200r, and other equipment installed on your bike. Consult the documentation and experiment to see what settings you like the best.
