This job is of such that I cannot describe in complete detail everything that needs to be done. I can but it's just too much. I'd strongly suggest that you purchase a service manual. There are some things that you need to know that are best described by the use of a picture.

However, basically what you'll have to do is remove the outer primary cover and all the primary drive inside of it. Remove the exhaust system. Remove the starter and get it out of the way. Go back to the left side of the bike and remove the inner primary cover so you can get to the lever on the shifter pawl shaft. Remove the top cover of the transmission and the shifting mechanism with the shifter forks there. Then, on the right side of the transmission, remove the clutch release mechanism and remove the bolts from the "trapdoor" on the transmission. Pry the trapdoor off the dowels and remove it along with both the mainshaft and the countershaft of the transmission with the gears on them from the transmission housing. Then, you can get the shifter pawl shaft out of the transmission.

This job is really not difficult and there's not a lot of special tools required. There are however some things that you need to know such as the mainshaft nut on the clutch assembly has LEFT HANDED THREADS. You will need a torque wrench that can torque in the left handed direction. The rest is basic stuff but there's a lot of it. It's a very time involved job.

Good Luck
Steve

Going crazy trying to figure this out.....what is the best oil to use in my 1992 FLSTF Fatboy (Engine, Primary and transmission oils) What are your preferences? Syn or regular

There's books out there on oil. Of course everyone say's to use there oil.
Do some reading on the subject and make an INFORMED decision.

Stock engine = stock oil
hell raiser = better oil (what does that mean) O it cost more
blue purple stuff only if it makes you sleep better at night.
ALL oils are not equal but just get one that meets the requirements
The most important thing is to CHANGE the oil when it gets dirty

Need handlebar wiring schematics for a 1192 FLSTF

I think you meant a 1992 FLSTF. I can send you a schematic but you'll have to contact me directly. This site limits me to a 150Kb file transfer. The schematic is much larger than that along with it's "key". Contact me directly at wd4ity@bellsouth.net and remind me of what you need.

1992 FLSTF fatboy.. everything was ok when i started out onthe highway, 1st and 2nd gear seemed ok but when i shifted to 3rd gear , the shift lever got sloopy and would not go into 3rd gear or higher. 1st...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like the shifter pawl return spring has broken on the shifter pawl shaft. Harley has had a problem with these but there is not a recall notice on it as far as I know.

The fix is a major job in that all the primary has to be pulled as well as all the guts in the transmission. The shaft will not come out with the two shafts in the transmission. But, at least the five speed transmission is designed to do this with. Much easier than the older four speed.

I do not recommend that you even start the engine until this is repaired. I've heard of the broken spring getting into the gears and doing even more damage. I've been replacing them with either Sputhe or Jim's parts.

How do I change the Transmission FLuid in a 1996 FLSTF

On the right side of the bike, just under the chrome end cover on the transmission, there is a small drian plug. I may be behind the exhaust pipes. I think it uses a Torx type wrench to remove it. Drain the oil here. Remove the large plug in the chrome cover with a 3/8" hex key and refill the transmission with 20-24 ounces of the appropiate lubricant.

How much oil does a 1993 harley softail transmission take

About a quart. Stand the bike straight up and remove the derby cover. Fill to the bottom of the spring in the clutch assembly. Do not overfill or you'll be unable to find neutral with the engine running.

Gear shifter is free floating, wont shift at all. stuck in third, i think, limped her home. primary case hot, 96 fat boy that just had belt change.

If the shaft to the foot lever snapped off inside the case, you may be able to pull the end out. It may have broken a spring between two ratchet arms the pull the shift fork drum to rotate through the gears. Pull the side cover and see if these components are accessible. If not, it means opening the transmission case to get at the parts.
