How do I remove the old pads. thy're held on by a pin. i need to remove that pin?

Without more information as to the year and model of BMW, I can't give you exact and helpful information.

Most of the rear pad retainer pins need to be driven out with a small pin punch and hammer. Some of the newer front pins unscrew with a hex or torx driver.

Hello Dale, this is an easy job on your bike. Use a flat head screw driver and remove the brake pad will pop off.
Remove the hairpin type clips off of the ends of the brake pad pins.... Use pliers & pull the brake pad pins out from the front of the rear brake caliper....Clean the rear brake caliper's piston with brake cleaner. Use a rag and wipe it clean...Reinsert the old brake pads into the caliper. Place a pry bar between the brake pads, then push the inner piston into the caliper body, this will allow room to install new pads.... Remove the old brake pads...Coat the brake pad pins and the new brake pads metal back plates with high-temperature grease.

Slip the new brake pads into the rear brake caliper, then push the brake pad pins halfway into the caliper. Slip the spring clips into place between the brake pads and the brake pad pins. Push the brake pad pins completely through the rear brake caliper. Push the hairpin clips back into the brake pad pin tips. Snap the brake pad cover onto the top of the rear brake caliper....

Pump the rear brake pedal until the pedal feels firm, indicating that the brake pads have closed around the brake rotor...No bleeding will be needed because the system was never opened - That's all there is to it...i hope this information is helpful & good luck with your bike.

How do i replace rear brake pads? And check condition or rotors?

The piston brake pad assembly is usually held in place by two bolts that face the car. Remove these and tap the assembly off .Hang the assembly from a wire.remove the two larger bolts that hold the rest of the assembly in place and remove the rotor.I would simply replace the rotors with after market rather than bother with the old ones.Replace rotor and larger cage.taking carefull note remove the brake pads and compress the brake piston with a C clamp. They should push back with minimal resistance.Check all brake components at this time including the large pins the brake assembly move back and forth on. Install your new pads and replace all the bits.Good luck.P.S. A digital camera might be helpfull if you haven't done this kind of thing before

Need to replace rear brakes on 2008 street glide harley davidson

it's pretty straight forward. remove saddle bag, remove the 2 allen bolts that hold the caliper to bracket slide caliper up off of disc. then remove the small 3/16 allen bolt this is the pad pin that hold the pad. before you remove the pads turn caliper upside down and with a large screwdriver put it betweenthe old pads and trist it to push the piston back in the caliper this will give you room for the new pads. then just lift the old pads out and put in the new and reinstall the pad pin and caliper back on bracket install the 2 bolts removed first and tighten good. if you need any more help just ask.

G'day, from what I can see from pics, your hammer should be disc brake rear. This means there's usually no need to remove the wheel. If you have a close look at it you should be able to see how the pads are removed. Some pads are held in by pins or bolts that pass through holes in the pad to hold it in, others are held in by the caliper itself & you'll need to remove it to change pads.You'll need to sqeeze the pistons back into the caliper if you're putting new thicker pads in. You can use a G clamp & old pad to do this, just keep an eye on the fluid res.hope this helps :)

hi matt,not that hard to do,undo the two bolts holding the caliper onto the fork leg,slide the caliper off the disc,there could be two ways of getting the pads out,there could be a cover over the caliper obscuring the pads if this is the case simply remove the cover to expose the disc pads,the pads are normally held in by either spring clips or two long pins that go from one side of the caliper-through the disc pads and through to a reciever hole on the other side of the caliper,simply remove the pins(normally held in plce by a small "r" clip)slide the pins out and the pads are ready to remove,before you remove the pads push back the pistons i normally do it with a large bladed screwdriver between the pads and push the pistons back as far as you can,install the new pads and reassemble the pins/holder or retainer,do not use any grease or oil /lubricants to reassemble the caliper,if you do,when the pads heat up under normall use the lubricant will end up on the pads,causing failure,fit the caliper back onto the fork leg making sure there is one pad either side of the disc,it may be a tight fit,if they wont go on ,push the caliper pistons further back,once you have the caliper reinstalled on the fork leg tighten up the bolts that secure the caliper....this bit is critical.....operate the brake lever untill the lever firms up and you are 100%certain that the pads are now seated on the disc,i have seen people not do this and the results are normally quite painfull,this all sounds like an absolute major rebuild,but once you know the sequence it shouldnt take more than about 20mins to do the job from start to finish,hope this helps...cheers ian

How do I remove the rear brake calipers on a 05 victory hammer motorcycle. I dont see any bolt heads at all.

On my 06 kingpin, there is a single pin that is held in place with a retaining pin. Take out retaining pin, slide out long pin, then pads slide right out. Be sure to press calipers open with screwdriver prior to removing old pads and be careful to not scratch the rotors

Trying to change the brakes on my mothers 1990 Mazda 323s brakes

It is fairly easy. On these cars, you don't need to unbolt the caliper, or remove it. If you remove the two pins, the brake pad will just slide out. The two pins are held in by an arrangement of wire clips. You need to squeeze the wire clip, and lever it back, then pull it clear of the pin. It is difficult to explain, but quite easy to figure out. You don't need to use any tools, you should be able to remove the spring clip thing by hand.

Stuck Brake Pad Pins

I suggest pulling the axle out a bit to allow the caliper assy more freedom of movement. Then see if you can get the pins out. If not, you can put something (like a piece of wood) between the pistons and the rotor on the outside and gently pump the pedal to see if that does in fact loosen the pins. But a more fundemental question: is the new floating rotor the EXACT diameter as the OEM (or whatever was on there) rotor? It sounds to me like the rotor is jammed against the pins. If it is the same size, are the new pads the same shape as the old ones (same profile on the metal backing)?

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. If equipped, disconnect the brake pad wear sensor from the harness.
  3. Counterhold the lower sliding pin using a thin open-end wrench and remove the caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  4. Pivot the caliper upward or if necessary remove the upper caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  5. Using a brake caliper retraction tool, select the appropriate sized piston press arbor and install the tool onto the brake caliper. Following the tool manufacturer's recommendations, use the tool to rotate the caliper piston clockwise as it is pressed into the brake caliper housing, until it is fully retracted.

  1. Clean the brake caliper and all sliding surfaces. With the caliper piston pressed fully back into the caliper housing, check for leaking fluid and damaged dust boots.
  2. If equipped, install a new brake pad wear sensor in the pad if the plastic part has been worn through on the old sensor. New sensors are not required unless the wire inside the plastic part has been exposed.
  3. Lubricate the slider bolts with approved brake grease.
  4. Install the brake pads onto the bracket assembly, and then carefully lower the caliper over the caliper mount. Check and make sure that the pad springs are correctly seated.
  5. Replace all removed caliper-to-sliding pin bolts and torque to:
  6. 1990-97 Passat models: 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
  7. 1998-00 Passat models: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
  8. If equipped, connect the brake wear sensor wire to the harness. Check for a good connection as most problems with the sensor circuit are caused by faulty connections. Check that the wire is held by the loop in the dust cover and the connector is held at the clips.
  9. Install the wheels and hand tighten the lug bolts. Lower the vehicle carefully until the tires begin to contact the surface and torque the lug bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern to:
  10. M12 x 1.5 lug bolts: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
  11. M14 x 1.5 lug bolts: 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)

The pins need to come out to remove the pads from the caliper bracket. They rust, and seize in place. What I do here is spray a good rust-penetrant on the pins, let it soak in for about an hour, and then, using a hammer & small punch, I tap the pins out. After you get the pins out, wire-brush them to get the rust off, and apply come anti-seize on them when you reinstall them.
