Both the 1985 honda xr250r and xr350 look loke they have self adjusting cam chain tensioners. You may have a broken tensioner or tensioner guide. With the age of the bike you may need a new cam chain. There is nothing to adjust so you need to just figure out if the chain is stretched , if a guide is broken, or if the tensioning mechanism is malfunctioning.

The first time i heard the noise i was cought in traffic the bike got alittle hoy it sounded like a ball bearing bouncing around when i got back on the road it stoped the bike run fine

Hi Kmercer, could be primary noise. Remove the square inspection cover and check to see if your primary chain adjuster slipped or came loose giving lots of chain slop. Chain should have no more than 1" total up and down play. Next drain the primary oil and check the magnet on the drain plug. Fiber or powder like accumulation is normal but if you find solid metal pieces remove the primary cover and do a through inspection of the chain, sprokets, and adjuster. If everything checks out ok you might want to take it to your local dealer or shop and let them listen to the noise. Good luck

The only fix I know is to replace the chain and gears. There isn't any adjustment for wear. Hope this helps.

Theres is a tick in the engine all thru the rpm's and it smokes but no loss of power,i tried to adjust the timing chain adjuster but still makes the noise,i suspect it to be a bad valve spring but not...

It won't be a bad spring if the bike runs well. It is probably just a tappet out of adjustment. Set the valve clearances. Use only premium gas.

Engine noise

sounds like it could be 2 things. the valve tappets, meaning valves need adjusting and or loose cam chain which may need adjusting.

Noise from gearbox near front sprocket.

Your bike may need the harmonic balancer chain adjusted. Th will notice is noise is very prominent at engine idle and low RPM's. When this chain get lose you will feel the vibration even in the handlebars if it is loose enough.
