You answered your own question. Its technically not supposed to be used as a "cruise control". Its primary function was/is to hold a steady idle speed during "warm-up". It is simply a manual screw in = "on" and screw out/release the tension for "off".

I am switching the tank on my 2001 road king classic, how do i remove the fuel guage?

1. Remove seat.

2. Unthread bolt and remove battery negative cable (black)
from battery negative (-) terminal.

3. Remove acorn nut and Phillips screw (with flat washer)
from instrument console.

4. Lay a clean shop towel on forward part of rear fender.
Lift the instrument console from fuel tank and lay upside
down on shop towel.

5.bend back the flexible metal clip to free the
harness conduit from the bottom of the console.

6. Remove the Speedometer Connector from the back of the speedometer.
Depress the external latches and use a rocking motion
to separate the pin and socket halves.

to release the lock ring from the back of the speedometer.

8. Turn the console over and remove the speedometer
from the top side.

9. Remove gasket from console speedometer bore.

Cannot set the cruise. It will turn on, but will not set.

Check to make sure the cable that connects to the throttle body for the cruise control is connected.

How do you set the cruise control on my 2008 Road King Classic, FLHRCI. I bought the bike, no manual... Thank-you

Luckily, I have a 2008 Road King Classic (FLHRC) WITH a manual!

On the left handlebar switch housing there is a lever below the left turn signal button.
It should be flipped to the right for the cruise control to be on, left is off.

On the right switch housing, is a similar lever, below the right turn signal button.

When you're above the minimum speed (I do not know what this is, but 30 MPH is not fast enough for it to engage), push the lever to the right (towards the grip end). This will "SET" the speed.
If you hit the brakes, or accelerate above a certain rate, the cruise will kick off.
To get back to the set speed, when you're above the minimum speed, flip lever to the left to resume.

When the speed is set and engaged, to increase the set speed, flip right lever to the right, to slow, flip to the left.
