Question about Yamaha RD 250 Motorcycles

1 Answer

Dear P. I have YAMAHA VIRAGO 250 and have a problem with the fuel selector. I tried on all the three positions (ON, Reserve and Primary) but in all the choices I run out off fuel without any extra fuel in the fuel tank. I guess the three tube connected to the selector are wrongly connected. Please HELP !!!! Thankyou. Matusala

To see what is wrong you will have to drain the tank and take off the fuel tank outlet(filter assembly). What you should see is a tube sticking up with a fuel filter over it. The tube allows the fuel to enter the carburetor down to that level , when the fuel petcock is in the ON position. When you switch to RESERVE the rest of the fuel flows down through a hole at the base of the fuel petcock. If the tube is missing from the fuel tank outlet(filter assembly) or/and the actual fuel petcock switch (sometimes a separate part )you will not have RESERVE. Another way you have no RESERVE is if you have a leaking four hole washer in your fuel selector. This allows the fuel to flow from RESERVE to ON inside the selector valve(gas leaking in petcock but not escaping outside petcock). "Honda" has all sizes of 4 hole washers available, but , the assembly may not be designed to be taken apart and reassembled. In either case you may end up having to buy an assembly to fix your problem.

Why is my 535 virago not going on reserve tank

Apparently this is a common problem that I also have. Another website said that there is not a true reserve. This bike is designed to slow down the fuel pump when the reserve switch is on the "on" position and the fuel is low to give you the sense that you are running out of gas. My solution, reset the trip meter each time you get gas and make sure you fill up before reaching 100 miles.

I have a 1983 Yamaha Virago 500 and I really need to know what RES and PRI mean on the fuel-**** and how I should use these functions

Those are your PRImary and REServe tanks, although it's actually just two valve openings at different levels in the same fuel tank.

The idea is to use the primary tank all the time and if the fuel level falls below the primary inlet the bike will stop as a warning that you're running out of gas. You can then use the reserve setting to get to a gas station.

Where is the reserve switch on a 1985 yamaha viargo

Many motorcycle models do not have a reserve if they have a fuel gauge.

If you do have a reserve selector, it will be part of the device bolted to the bottom of the tank that the fuel line is attached to.

I think though that you have an automatic shutoff that only allows fuel flow when vacuum is present (eliminating the "On/Off" selector), a fuel gauge, and no reserve system.

What is the off position for the petcock in the vstar 250? I only see ON, PRI, and RES. I just got the bike from someone else and I know that you are supposed to turn the petcock to the off position when...

up (res) is reserve, down(on) is primary, center(marked as pri is for prime, used for if ran out of fuel or drained the carb or been sitting for a long time). There is no off as the fuel system is vacuum fed instead of greavity)
