The neutral safety switch is located inside the the case cover where the front sprocket is. Should be just below the sprocket.

What is a neutral safety switch?

The Neutral Safety switch monitors the position of your gear selector lever and either interrupts or allows the starting circuit in your car or truck to do its job. On newer vehicles it may also monitor the position of the brake pedal to make sure that the vehicle is in park or neutral AND that your foot is on the brake.

If your vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch, it should NOT start UNLESS the transmission is in Neutral or Park. On the other hand your vehicle SHOULD start when it is in Neutral or Park. If your car will start in Neutral but not in Park, you have a bad switch. Also, if your car or truck will only start by turning the key to the start position and wiggling the gear selector lever, your neutral safty switch is in need of replacement.

The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.

I have a 96 cavalier.it wouldnt start by using the ignition key,so i shorted the solenoid and it started...got home and it still wouldnt start,so i did the same thing and it started, then all the warning...

it can be the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch. put the transmission in neutral to see if it will start, if it does then the neutral safety switch is bad. if not then check your ignition switch

Battery is good, no lights, no nothing when key is

May be ignition switch and/or neutral safety switch (IF equipped with one). Brake light switch and neutral switch may be working in union. Sww if you can see it under the wheel on the column and tell if you can adjust it first before replacing.

My car want start when i turn the key all the lights come on

neutral safety switch on column not working properly. try starting it with gear indicator in neutral position or slowly move shift lever up and down with the key turned on to start position.

2000 Pontiac Sunfire wont start

Its likely that you have either a bad ignition switch or a bad neutral safety switch (if stickshift, clutch switch) Try starting in neutral...if it starts, change neutral switch (jump across clutch switch, check starting in neutral with your foot on the brake) Ignition switch is on top of steering column under dash.

Key stuck in ignition

Under the steering column is an access plug. Remove the plug and insert a small shaft driver into the hole and push up gently, the key will release.
