Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic

1 Answer

2000 Heritage Softail (75 185 miles) - carburettor - started running on front cylinder only. Feels as if petrol is turned on and off which produces heavy forward leaping and suddenly slowing down motion. Opening throttle makes no difference. It's happening more frequently now. Switch off. Wait 5 mins, starts up again, only to produce similar symptoms. Happens on short rides and long rides. Mechanic checked all fuses, connectors, earths, wiring, engine cut off/ignition switch, harness, battery, etc. Fault code is too general to pinpoint problem. Pse help. I'm too scared to ride anymore in case I get stranded. Mech says its electrical fault but cannot locate it. pse help

Spark plugs were checked and replaced (just in case), plug leads were replaced, coil was swapped with one from exact same model, as was the CDI. Turn signal wiring which ran inside handle bar was removed, checked and is now on outside of bar. Ignition switch was checked. Heated grips with wiring was discarded. Sorry, forgot to mention that speedo needle oscillates wildly when problem is encountered. Digital distance indicater on dash flickers on and off and engine red light comes on. Hope this info helps.

You have not mentioned the spark plug. Did not check or did not mention here? Anyway, please check if the rear plug is getting blueish spark. You also mention of an asthamatic running. It could be fuel problem as well. Remove the rear spark plug wire, insulate it and try to run the bike a short period. See if there is any difference. And then come back to me.

That is information overload. But, you seem to have got it thoroughly checked. To me it seems that the flickering speedo has no connection with the problem but it could be the lights coming on and off. There may be a short somewhere in the wiring and that could be sending less current to the plugs. And how do you say so confidently that the bike is running on front cylinder? it could be running on both and the short may be causing the hiccups.

Picked up vibration an its not coming from motor mounts feels like in the balancing part but i am not up to par on twin cam motors an not sure where this takes place

According to what this webpage is showing, you are talking about a 2000 FLSTC Softail. If this is correct, your bike has the TC88B motor in it. The "B" motor is a counterbalanced engine put in the Softail only.

It has two counterbalance weights in the engine, one at the front of the crankcase just below and in front of the front cylinder and one back where the transmission bolts to the engine. They are driven by a small single row chain and must be timed with the crankshaft. Sounds like the balancers have gotten out of time or quit altogether. I don't have much experience on the Twin Cam engines. I mostly work on the old Harleys like Panheads, Shovelheads, and Evos. But I do know the TC88B engine is a counterbalanced engine. Good Luck.

1993 Heritage Softail Classic motorcycle. Front

First, I'd try replacing the bulbs in both the front and rear turn signals. See what happens, that's pretty inexpensive to try.

The turn signals are controlled by the turn signal cancelling unit. You didn't mention if the problem was on just one side or if it was on both sides of the bike. I'd try to find someone that had a known good unit that would allow me to try it. The reason, they're expensive. The last one I installed cost nearly $150.
