Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard

Bike keeps stalling.at first start up is normal choke out runs ok until it gets about warm up time to push in choke then it dies.will not start back up unless ing. And run switch are reset. Does not want to idle just dies.I have methodically checked for shorts ,loose connects etc.I did a quick cleaning of jets and car. Bat tested good .checked gas tank vent and made sure of vacuum gas is flowing. Did clean scarlet connects.oh, I'm not sure if it goes with other symptoms but the battery has drained on me a few times too but did pass bench test.

Ok, Never use the enricher anymore than you have to. It's way to rich on every CV carb I've ever seen. It will foul your plugs. I start my bike with the enricher on but as soon as I can keep the bike running at a fast idle with the throttle tension screw on the bottom of the throttle grip, I set the screw to hold the idle at about 1500 RPM or so until the engine is completely warm on the top end. When the rocker boxes start to feel a bit warm, I'm ready.

Now, when Harley came out with the Twin Cam, I quit working on them. I work only on the older models, Evo powered and older. The reason is that Harley went to electronic engine control modules. This sounds a lot like what you've got.

To cure your idles problems, once you get your engine to full operating temp, set the idle speed using the throttle stop screw at the carb. Take the air cleaner outer cover off and you should be able to see the screw at the top front of the carb. Clockwise speeds the idle up. Now, the engine is not going to idle correctly until it is completely warmed up. That usually takes at least five miles of riding or so. Until then, you must keep the idle set with the throttle grip.

The alternative to this is a fuel injection system. And, you only think you have problems now. Read some of the problems those people have on this forum. I'll keep my '94 FXDWG.

When to adjust idle


If you can keep the bike running long enough to get it warm with and with no choke then that is when you should adjust the mixture,
First though start by adjusting it cold so the screw is set at about 1.5-2 turns out then run till warm set idle at around 1500 revs and adjust until it just starts to lift the revs then back off a quarter turn

have you left the choke open ? this mixes more fuel to the engine upon starting but will stall it if left open too long . check your fuel filter too it may be full of debris.

I have a 1995 kawi 750 and at idle she runs great but as soon as u go to ride and get to 5000 to 6000 rpm it will just die but if u push in this black little button under the clutch or play with it a bit...


triple check choke? Is it staying on once warm? Mine was cable and siezed and choke on to start from cold, when it warmed up it turned out choke was stuck half on. Like if you ride then whack choke on it stalls?

Starts but takes a very long time to warm up. continually stalls when throttle applied. have to keep feathering throttle to keep running . spits ,sputters , backfires until fully warmed up


ColdI engines require a richer mixture to operate smoothly...so they have an enricher (aka choke).
If you are finding you need to keep the choke on longer.....you may have a lean mixture than normal.nother
Start by inspecting the carb and intake manifolds for any leaks (loose fittings....cracked hoses) that could be drawing in air, leaning the mixture.

Another common issue with bikes that have sat over winter...is plugged idle jets.....the fuel varnishes the tiny orifices in the carb. You could try a product like Seafoam in the fuel tank....run it abit to get the treated fuel in the carbs then let it sit overnight...allowing time for the chemical to work. Since the bike runs fine warm...this may clear things up for you.

Sounds like the idle circuit in the carb is restricted. The engine is running on the choke only. When the engine reaches a certain temp the fuelthat does get is more readily burned allowing you to back off the choke. The choke probsbly can't be completely opened? right? Fuel quality is also something to consider Oil content in fuel affects combustion temps and volatility. _good luck_Ned_

Try keeping it at half choke for long enough time to completely warm up. Once you have warmed it up, put it on "run". If it still dies out, get back to FIXYA. Good luck...Lee

ok buddy on the carb will be some sort of screw and idle screw turn this in 1/4 of a turn with the machine running until it idles at 1000rpm also the choke will stall the engine when warm the choke is only for cold starts get back to me more info or problems f4d68ca.jpg

If the bike has sat for a long period of time without being run - the gas that is sitting in the carb(s) will shellac.. Then the carb(s) would need to be cleaned and "rebuilt"..

There seems to be fuel starvation to the carbs.
Check the fuel filter and the petcock, not bad too to clean the carb/s.

749 Starting Problem


I don't think there's anything wrong with your bike. I'm assuming that all the required services have been done and you have a good battery. The **9 bikes absolutely require a good strong battery. If you don't already have one get and use a battery tender. It will save you a lot of headaches with a weak battery. As for the starter speed, the 749 turns over S-L-O-W-L-Y. It's normal, if you're use to other makes it sounds like it won't start but it will. The Fast Idle lever, not a choke, once you start the bike, let it idle about 2000 RPM or so until the coolant temp gage stops flashing, then you can slowly back the lever to minimum, if you if you just push the lever back fast it drops the idle too fast and it will die. When it's not fully warm and you have a stock injection map it runs a little lean and will be cold blooded until fully warm. The occasional stall on a cold morning is not unusual even on a properly set up bike. I normally on cool mornings keep my fast Idle lever up until I'm either on a highway/freeway or a five or so miles in town before I turn it full off. She can be a real bitch to start if she's only a little warm, not cold/not hot, I really don't know why but mine does the same thing. I give it a minute and try again and she'll fire. All this goes away once she's fully warmed up. Once you get the knack of it you'll be fine, I don't even really have to think about it anymore.
