The first thing you want to do is check the battery, This is the most likely cause. Take the battery out of the bike and take it to an auto parts store. Ask them to "load test" the battery. They'll usually do this for no charge. If the battery test good or you replace the battery, make sure your connections are clean and tight.

If it's not the battery, it could be the contacts inside the starter's solenoid. Since I don't know what model bike we're working on or how many miles it has on it, I'll be general in nature. On the right side fo the bike you'll see a five sided plate on the end of the starter solenoid. Remove the three small bolts and remove the plate. There's a plunger and a spring behind the plate that you'll remove. Inside the solenoid, you'll see two large copper contacts. If they're badly burned, you can get a rebuild kit that comes with new contacts and a new plunger. This should cure your problem.

Good Luck

Nutral switch on honda shadow aero 1100

If there is a click when pushing the starter button first check the starter itself by checking for battery voltage at the starter cable when the click is heard. If there is voltage the starter is the problem. If there is silence when the starter button is pushed check for voltage at the small yellow/ red wire on the harness side of the connector for the starter relay. This relay can be found by following the positive battery cable to it. If there is voltage present when pushing the button the relay is most likely bad. If not the right hand handlebar switch may be bad. Hondas have a problem with melting the contacts in the starter button portion of this switch. Open up the switch and jump across the black to the yellow/red terminals on the starter button circuit board. If the starter spins this switch is bad.

My 250 vt 1999 turn key on headlights everything works! when I press start button headlight goes out and bike dosnt start, take finger off start button head light comes back on.

Your starter button is designed to turn the headlight off when pushed in halfway so all the batteries electricity goes to the starter. The starter button is a two position switch. The starter button may be either dirty and need cleaning or is broken and needs to be replaced. If you push the button all the way in do you hear a click? If you hear a click by the battery , then the starter button is good. Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. With an old screw driver or a piece of wire touch the two terminal posts on the starter solenoid together. If your starter works now you have a bad starter solenoid. If you hold the starter button and lightly tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, then you probably need to replace your starter brushes they are worn out.

When the ignition switch is pushed all the bike does is clicks. It will push start and run with no other problems.

If you push the starter button and the solenoid clicks, the button is good. Take a wire and jump the two posts on the solenoid or touch the two cables together. If your starter works, then you need a new solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works you need new starter brushes. Anything else wrong with the starter and you need to replace the starter assembly , unless the manufacturer sells replacement parts so you can repair the starter. most manufacturers only sell replacement starter brushes.

Bike wont start. just clicks. battery is ok. need help?

I assume the engine is not seized and the battery is charged and good. Push the starter button, if you hear a click from the solenoid the button is good. Now , jump the two cable posts on the starter solenoid. If the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you push the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, you need new starter brushes. If anything else in the starter is keeping it from working you need a new starter , the starter parts are not available from the manufacturer.

The starter does not turn the engine over, it jus clicks?

I assume the engine is not seized and the battery is charged and good. Unplug the two small wires going to the starter solenoid and push the starter button . With a voltage meter on the wires from the harness you should have continuity.Reconnect the wires.

Take a piece of wire or a screw driver and short the terminals on the solenoid. If the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, you need new starter brush's.If you take the starter apart and do not have continuity between every other armature contact, just buy a new starter and put it in.
