I have coolant dripping from the timing cover on my yz250 1991.What is the cause and how do i fix it?

Thats all thats there, water pump,inlet tube,Take the cover off & pressure check the system. PS. a bad water pump doesn't have to be noisy to be faulty. the gasket,connections & water seals go bad too. Does the timing belt squeal? take off that cover & check it out. good luck

Yes the timing cover gasket can leak coolant. The coolant passes the waterpump and is pump into the engine block thru the timing cover. to see the actual leak jack up passenger side of car support with jack stand take off wheel and the splash guard now you can see the crank shaft pulley look up at waterpump on both side it goes back to engine block with a mirror you can see it leak.

probably a gasket that seals coolant behind cover. I don't remember if there is a freeze plug there.
sometimes a head gasket leak can do the same but not very common.

Sounds like your water pump is just starting to leak. Are you sure its water and not coolant. Seem funny But make sure your car just doesn't have water in it instead of coolant. put a white piece of paper under it and let it drip on it to determine the color. Not terribly hard job to do but if your fairly new to repairs might get some help with it.

Leaking timing cover gasket or intake manifold gasket.

There are no coolant lines etc running on the lower part of the engine. Usually water will leak from above and run down finally dripping from under the engine. Coolant will not leak from the "engine" it leaks from a hose or thermostat housing.

Start from the top and work down. Check each hose by feeling with your hand. Look for a wet spot. wipe the hosed with a cloth to clean if necessary. If you think you found it dry the area and check again. Sometimes you need to move the hose around to open a small tear and expose the leak source.

If a hose leak tighten the clamp. If torn hose you may be able to disconnect, cut the end and reattach. If too short replace.

Check where each hose connects to the engine. This will be the thermostat housing and the heater supply line. If a housing try gently tightening (careful they crack). Or replace the gasket.

If you don't see a leak at all. Start the engine and run. This will build pressure in the cooling system. Look for leak using the same process. Careful as the engine is hot.

This is caused by a leak in either the heater core itself or the hoses connecting to the heater core.

Rust and corrosion can clog the tiny passages in your heater core. Sometimes the block becomes so severe that pressure builds up in the heater core causing it to spring a leak of coolant - enough to give off the smell you describe.

Solution: Replace heater core or hoses depending on what you find.

sounds like there not installing the seal right. have you taken it to the same place to have it repaird every time?

sounds like timing cover or water pump

check the 2 large hoses that come from the radiator, at the radiator and at the engine. if not there then your losing water into your engine, probably means your head gasket is cracked and about to blow
