Question about Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard Motorcycles

1 Answer

Have a 1998 Custom Softtail, when it rains it only fires on 1 cyclinder. Have had it to 2 shops, they replaced the coil and leads. Has not fixed the problem.

Replace the spark plugs, you've got one cracked. Wait until dark tonight. Roll your bike out into the driveway and start it up. Spray it with the water hose unitl it starts to miss on the one cylinder. Look for a wire or spark plug to arc. You can see it readily in the dark.

Good Luck
Steve

I am having trouble fiquiring out which wire goes to which plug. The wires are different lengths and the correct wire length has to go specifically with the correct plug. I have the firing order dia

The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6
Cyl #1 is front left when looking at engine front to back
left coil pack connects to cyls. 5-2
center coil pack connects to cyls. 3-6
right coil pack connects to cyls. 4-1
It doesn't matter which connector on the coil you use just that the cylinder is connected to the proper coil pack (the coil fires both plugs at the same time, twice per each full 4 stroke cycle)

Firing order

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

For and MC22, seated on the bike, the left hand ignition coil fires cylinders 1 & 4 while right hand ignition coil powers 2 & 3 cylinders.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

What do these trouble codes mean po306 cyclinder misfire detected .how do i fix the problem?

it means you have a misfire on the number 6 cylinder

this could be caused by a whole lot of reasons.

start by inspecting for a bad plug wire if it has them

check for fire on the cylinder with a spark test tool from local part store

if it is a coil-on-plug set-up, check the coil for fire

replace coil/plug wire as needed, replace boot on coil if coil needed, replace spark plugs

Timing diagram? Fire order? counter clock wise? 10 degreees? on Distributer where is number 1 located? TDC?

no 1 front left hand side ,engine rotates clockwise ,10ª might be too much for unleaded fuel 95octane i would go for 6/8 degrees unless you are putting in a lead substitute .firing order 153624
