Question about 2000 Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom

1 Answer

Have a 1999 Sportster 1200C that recently died on me 30 minutes into a ride. It had sat for a few weeks prior to that ride. Trailered it home, and found the plugs had fouled. Replaced plugs and coil, had the battery checked and all is good. It runs now, but getting lots of pops out of the carb, and on my last ride, lost power under heavy acceleration, coasted to the shoulder but restarted relatively easily and rode it home (about 10 miles). Brought the carb back to factory settings, re-tuned it. Checked and replaced vacuum lines. Was worried about vapor lock, so raised the take re-routed cross-over and fuel line away from hotter engine parts (custom tank about a year ago). Idles nice, but even in the driveway if I rev it it pops and back fires (idling at between 920 and 1080 rpms) - any ideas?

It sounds like you have trash in your jets. The bike sitting for two weeks is not long enough to cause the problem and neither is the crossover fuel line in the front of the tanks. The cross over simply allows fuel on the right side of the "hump" in the tank to get to the left side where the petcock is.

Now, the petcock could be your problem. In 1996, H-D went to the vacuum operated petcock and have had troubles with them since. If you'll look on the backside of your petcock, you'll see a small tube that supplies vacuum to the petcock. Check and make sure this tube is properly connected on both ends.

If it is, you can loosen the petcock to drain the fuel out of the tank. Catch the fuel using a large funnel and an empty fuel can. Take the petcock out of the tank. Inspect the screen. One the backside of the petcock, there is a square plate with four small screws holding it. Remove the screws and carefully take the plate off. There are several small parts in there. A diaphragm, a needle and a small spring. Take the diaphragm and hold it up to the light and carefully stretch it. Look to see if a hole is in the diaphragm. If so, replace the diaphragm. When you reassemble the petcock, make sure all the fuel passages are clear. Personally, I suggest replacing the vacuum operated petcock with a high quality manually operated petcock such as a Pingel. I've seen too many people stranded with a full tank of fuel but none in the carb due to these petcocks.

Good luck
Steve

Steve, Thanks for you reply. I replaced the petcock with a manual high flow Golan when I replaced the tank because the direction of the outlet on the old petcock (a Pingel) was a problem. WRT to the cross over line. When I put the new tank on, it sat really low and close to the heads. The crossover was basically sitting on the head, so I lifted the tank 2 inches and routed the crossover above the coil cover and put a pair of Kuryakyn flush mount venting caps to ensure unimpeded flow from the tank.

I suspect your right about the trash in my jets. I'm just hesitant to crack open the carb. I have an S

Check your battery connections and make sure they are tight where the positive cable attatches to the starter and the negative cable attatches to ground. Sportsters are notorius for this type of problem when the cables are loose.

well, if plugs are wet, try placing plugged in spark plug on the block, turn ingine, should spark blue. orange no good, none no. good lol.do both plugs and wires.if one works and the other one doesnt, you need a new plug.if both no good, having electronic ignition, most likely the coil is toast (make sure its plugged in good, cables and wires)
