Question about 1988 Honda GL 1500 Gold Wing
Tachometer will work at times and times it will not, works erratic at times this is on a 1988 gl1500 Honda Goldwing. check wiring seems to be ok. could it be the engine control unit?

You have Two Handles on the side of the seat... The allen bolts are in the handle... The bolts that hold the handle also hold the seat.... Remove all 4 bolt, Lift off seat from the rear. The front of the seat has a slide that goes in a grove

to get to the carbs, follow the air cleaner change instructions in the owners manual. then stuff rags in the carb throats. then remove the air box screws inside. the air box will lift up and you must remove hoses to get it out. the inner fairing walls then need to come off to get at the sides of it. but as far as i know, since this is as far as i have went, the boots must be removed from the carbs, and they have to be lifted out for service. they are not the same as the valkarie, the valk has 6 carbs. the gw has only 2.
it is a pain to get the hoses back on the air box, so be warned. lots of foul language may erupt. maybe better if more fairing was removed.

We had the same thing tonite. thanx to the guy that pointed us in the right direction.
More specificly, if you remove the seat, you will find two black plastic boxes, one on each side. they hold a 30-40 pin connector. the one on the left side (as you are sitting on it) we found one burned connection in the corner of the plug. a green wire. we cut the wire off both sides of the plugs & made a jumper (bypassed the plug) works good, even the cruise works now too.

most likely a fuel problem. these also have electric fuel pumps in the tank that give trouble sometimes. if you know how to do a fuel pressure test, it can be tested this way. it is a low pressure, just check for a flow is the main thing. there is a vacuum petcock inside the gas cap compartment that also has a diaphram that can fail and cut the fuel off. i doubt it is carburetor, since it has 2 and if one failed, it would still run, just really rough. google gl1500 groups. lots of helpful folks.
