Your bike is 22 years old. Yes, you should worry. If that chain breaks and locks up the engine at 60 mph, you will go flying down the street on your hands and knees until an oncoming car permanently stops your forward motion. Got the picture?

Get the bike serviced if you can get a dealer to work on the bike. Be aware that the cost for the repair, a new chain, gaskets, and chain tensioner ( if you can still find them ), is likely to be more than the bike is worth. A possible source for parts is the site below.

what? an '88 Hurricane in good shape is a $2000 plus bike. that's absurd to advise that, one, it may cost more for parts & labor than the bike's worth (still laughing)...and two, that the parts may not still be available?!. wow, you're clueless. i'm 47 and still have mine that i bought new in 1988. The only good advice provided here was to address it asap.

Growling engine noise only at idle. Cam area

Take all of the belts off for a short run at idle. If the sound goes away it is pulley related, spin each pulley and listen for bearing noise, also check for play at this time.

If the noise does not go away when the motor is driving no accessories you have a more serious problem.

Timing chains are typically life long, don't worry about it unless it starts making noise.

Check for exhaust leaks. Esp Leaks toward the front of the car. Hold your hand over the tail pipe using a rag and see where the loud hissing noise comes from. Repair the leaks and I bet the backfiring goes away

you have nothing to worry about. It's normal. The 3.5 diskette drive is a 4X speed and the noise you hear is normal. All FD83's and 88's will make noise and vibrate a little.
