  • The gears on a motorcycle run in this order: first, neutral, second, third, fourth and fifth. When you are moving, shifting up from first gear will skip over neutral and shift you right into second gear. The only time that shifting up from first will get you into neutral is when you are not moving.Pull in the clutch lever and tap the gear lever down until it stops. This will signify first gear. Pressing the gear lever down will shift you down one step and pressing it up will shift up one step.Tap the gear lever up one click while still holding in the clutch. This will put the bike into neutral.

During the spin cycle it started making a whining

it must be motor run away condition. motor must have exceeded its design speed and the internal windings must have parted off. you did the right thing. but, when your son switched on again, it would have run for few minutes with all internal extra friction and stopped with burnt smell. you have lost the motor. but, before replacing the motor get the speed control system checked.

What is the shift pattern on a 2005 vrod

How in the world did you end up with a motorcycle and you don't know how to shift it?

Standard shift pattern is down one, then up one click at a time to the top gear using the toe of your left foot. Down shift by tapping down, each tap goes down one gear through the neutral space to first. Neutral is down one up one. A neutral light should come on to indicate you are not in a gear. NEVER PUT ALL YOUR TRUST IN THAT LIGHT.

My friend, may I suggest you seek out and take the Basic Rider Course from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation before you go any further. It will not only teach you the basic operation of your motorcycle, which will help you obtain your driver license, it will also earn you a discount on your insurance. While it will not guarantee you a safe ride, it will give you the tools you need to be a safe and responsible rider.

Contact motorcycle dealers in your area to find out where you can take the BRC. Or, you can check here:

Please don't ride your motorcycle until you understand how it works and you get the skills necessary to safely operate it.

    No Fith Gear just revs

Have your friend remove the right side casing and check the shift pins in the end of the shift drum. A pin could be broken or missing which would mean there is no way to shift into or out of 5th gear. This is a simple check with no real cost at all. If the shift mechanism appears okay then the engine comes out of the frame and torn completely down top and bottom. An inspection of the gears and shift assembly should reveal the problem. The cost to repair at the dealer depends on the dealer. I made some calls and got costs from $1000 to $1500. A service manual and a mechanic friend who has done a transmission repair in the past would probably cost quite a bit less. I can offer a free online parts diagram for a 2002. This should help since most parts don't change in just one year. Also, if you can see the parts you can often figure out the repair. Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock.

Or you can go to this site and you can download a free PDF parts manual.

The following site has hard copy repair manuals for $80.00 (Ouch!) or for $25 you can see one online for one year. For $35 you have unlimited online access until you die (or until they go out of business, whichever comes first).
