How to hook up a motorcycle tachometer - 1993 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 883

I have a schematic that should cover your motorcycle but the tachometer is another story. You must have a tachometer that is designed for use on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The reason is that Harley, for the most part, has always used a "dual fire" ignition system. You have two spark plugs and they both fire every time the pistons come to top dead center. As far as I know, Harley is the only manufacturer to use this system. It's very much like a two-stroke engine as far as the igniton system is concerned. So, you just can't connect any tachometer to a Harley as you may get an erronous reading. If you want a copy of the schematic, contact me directly at wd4ity@bellsouth.net I cannot send it via this forum as the file size is too large. i'll send it as a JPEG picture file. Be sure to remind me of what you want.

    Good Luck
    Steve

Got a new tach ,my car doesn't have one, how do I hook it up to a '90 buick 3.3 with electronic ignition? The "instructions" only show how to hook up to standard ignition.

Hello! Your vehicle is equipped with a distributor-less ignition systems; C-31...Does your engine have a "coil pack"? As in two cylinders per coil? The coil pack has a two wire connector at the top which is Ground and +12 volts...At the bottom are 2 connectors...The one on the left is a 4 wire and to its right a 2 wire...the one you are interested in is the 4 wire connector...Reading from left to right...Pin 1=Ground...Pin 2=Reference voltage...Pin 3=6X...
And Pin 4=Tachometer
...Hook the Tachometer wire (probably a green lead) to Pin 4...There is the possibility that the ignition module has a Tachometer input connection...If so use it...If not use Pin 4...

How ti install a tachometer

It depends on the tachometer. Some tachometers operate off the ignition unit and others get their trigger from the coil. Also, since a Harley fires both plugs at the same time and every time the pistons come to top center. Therefore, the tachometer must be set up for this, just like for a two stroke engine or you'll get a erronous reading. Any tachometer that you buy should have wiring instructions with it.

I hope this helps
Good Luck
