I have gas shooting from the carburater directly into the air filter and subsequently leaking out onto clothing and bike. Any ideas what makes this happen.

Your carburetor is equipped with an accelerator pump that shoots a squirt of gasoline into the carb when you twist the throttle. There is a brass nozzle located in the very front of the throat of the carb that squirts the fuel. This nozzle is supposed to be positioned to squirt the fuel inwards into the carb. Is there a chance someone has turned this nozzle. If you look at it very closely, you can see the small **** or hole that the fuel comes out of.

Now, are you running your bike without the air cleaner on the engine. Although the accelerator pump nozzle should be set to direct the fuel into the carb, the air flow generated by the running engine should be pulling the fuel into the carb as well.

If you've got gasoline coming out of the carb and the engine is not running and you're not cranking on the throttle, you've got a problem with the needle and seat in the carb. Probably a piece of trash caught in the seat. You'll need to take the float bowl off of the carb to fix this problem.

You could also have a bad diaphragm in the accelerator pump. If the diaphragm gets a hole in it. fuel will flow up the tower that the accelerator pump actuator rod goes down into. While you've got the float bowl off, go ahead and replace this diaphragm for the accelerator pump as well. They're not that expensive.

Good Luck
Steve

My 2009 1200L sportster leaks oil out the air filter every 2000-3000 miles. It blows onto my exhaust and higher up. I've had my rocker boxes replaced(warranty issue) THREE TIMES- could this be rela

The problem is the the air breathers inside the rocker covers. Sad to say,but nearly all of them do this. One solution is to take off the air filter cover. There should be two bolts..(one on each side of the inside of the housing) that SHOULD have hoses hooked to them. If they do not have the hoses hooked to them, then that is your problem. See,these bolts are hollow, and have a nipple on the ends of them. These allow the top end to "breathe",a crankcase pressure relief if you will.Anyway,..these nipples are SUPPOSED to have a small hose on each of them, that re-direct the oil/crankcase pressure, into the carb/throttle body, which eliminates the oil running into your air filter housing.Check to make sure they are in fact there, and let me know what you find.

I am getting a gas leak out of the breather tube of the air filter while bike is running.

Make sure that you have a fuel filter on your fuel petcock or add an inline filter to keep rust from holding a float needle open. The carburetor in question may have either has a sunk float or a bad float needle or both. If the offending carburetor also has the vacuum line from the vacuum petcock, you may need to rebuild/replace the petcock if the vacuum diaphragm is leaking gas directly into the manifold/carburetor. Take apart and clean your carburetors. Inspect the needles and diaphragms for damage and replace if necessary.

I have a 92 vulcan 500, starting coupla days ago it leaks gas even when the bike is off. the air filter was soaked in gas when i pulled it out. i cleaned it but the gas seems to come from the carb directly...

This sounds like a carb overflowing this normaly occures when the float valve sticks, you will have to remove the bottom of the offending carb, remove and clean the float valve assembly inc seating

I have a gas leak that seems to be leaking from the gas filter under the car (1994 dodge carvan van awd) is that possible? Do I need to get a filter and the hoses? How do you take the pressure of the...

Check and make sure the hose clamps are tight if they are than the hoses themselves are probably cracked and will need replaced also make sure that the filter has not rusted causing a hole and resulting in a leak. To relieve the pressure put a small container directly under the filter and loosen one of the clamps holding the hose onto the filter fuel will leak into the container the filter itself will probably drain out as well.

My dirt bike won't fire it's a 1992 suzuki rm125 it has spark compression. but it's not getting gas the carb won't shoot out gas it shoots out air the ring on the screw on the bottom is shot.

is gas getting to the carb? check in line fuel filter if you have one. make sure fuel shut off valve on tank is working properly. if you are getting fuel to the carb, try cleaning it and making sure the jets aren't plugged up.

My 2006 kx450f will not start.

Compression release not fully closing? You have spark and you have air. Fuel is the unknown. Drain the carb float bowl. Now remove the water trap ( if the bike has one ),at the base of the fuel valve. Clean it out and try to start the bike after fresh gas fills the float bowl. You may want to give the air cleaner a shot of starting fluid.

Let me know what happens.

IF you have a battery get a new one ; put in new gas ; super; dsid you ajest any screws on carb. You tight need to run a prime tank right to your carb to prime it; and then hook your tank backup new gas lines to your carb. Now break out with the WD40 to spray all switches for rust.

Idle problems

Hmmm... this doesn't sound like a problem that belongs here... By "cuts off" do you mean stop running, or misfire? Carb. problems often are the result of the bike having set for many months or a year or two with old gas, which can result in a varnishing like of the fuel in the carburetors, which can clogg small passage ways, and subsequent no-idle, or other poor fuel delivery. Problems such as this require repair by knowledgeable mechanics. Other things which can upset correct fuel/air mixture are modifications such different exhaust system, air cleaner change, camshaft- any mod of these can require some retuning.
